17 Year old drivers permit

My oldest son just turned 17. Can you not get a learner's permit these days in Louisiana so that you can start teaching your kid how to drive without doing the 38 hour driver's ed course first? Any of you baws have a teen looking to get a license right now? How's drivers ed working these days with covid? Can you even get anyone on the phone at the DMV these days to ask questions?

Permit at 17? I got my license at 15 (could get permit or license, my dad didn’t want to go to dmv again to convert permit to license). My mind really can’t comprehend being 17 without a license. Sorry, I am of no help.

Yeah, you need the 6 hour course and 8 hours driving at 17.

Unless you live in downtown New York, Chicago, or well honestly they are the only two acceptable places to never need to drive you should have gotten his drivers license in hand a year ago

Expect to pay $200-250 more a month for insurance once he gets his license.

We just did this with my 17 year old. You have to get them a TIP card first. Then they take the 38 hr course, which includes the written test. Then they schedule 8 hrs of drives. Then they take a 3rd party driving test. All this is scheduled through the driving school. And then you can take them to the DMV with all of their paperwork saying they completed everything and they can get their license.
For people saying they should have already had their license, fyi a lot of kids aren't wanting to drive now. It's a thing. Idk why.

We added an additional $600 a month (almost $900 a month total) to our insurance bill when we added our 17 year old son with a 15 year old Ford ranger last year. Has gotten a little better since covid with Progressive dropping the rates, but it's still god awful.

My 15 year old just got her permit and she begs to drive everywhere. My 14 year old is already begging to start learning as well. This is going to be a money pit for me!

Bout 350.
Seriously though. Expensive. If you have 3 licensed drivers in your home and 3 vehicles then the insurance company will list each driver as a primary.
Split the vehicles up with different companies and put your name as primary and your sons as secondary on one of them and it'll be a lot cheaper.
