Appears to be a huge govt. waste,

quote:

Whether the service, which requires subsidies from the city of Mobile, Mississippi and Louisiana to continue, will be self-sustaining is unknown. According to Amtrak's five-year plan from 2021, it predicts the Mardi Gras Service will lose $8.2 million in its first year with ridership of 24,300 annually.

At $15 per ticket, ridership numbers that low would generate only $364,500 in annual revenue.

It was sarcam.

If roads had to pay for themselves we wouldn't have any. Well, very few.

A couple years ago I had to take the NO to Jackson MS Amtrak to pick up a loaner vehicle for a few weeks and then back again after returning it. It was a very pleasant trip. Every seat is like a recliner, much bigger than a 1st class plane seat. Took about an hour longer than driving if I remember. 100% would do again.

Less than 500 passengers a week and they thought this was a great idea.
That's only $7,500 a week worth of tickets. That won't even cover train employee pay.

This track doesn’t go to Slidell so I’d be shocked if it stopped there.

All you who are against it should really give a train ride a try. It’s incredible. You can mix your own drinks, smoke your own smoke, every person could sleep at once, you can stretch legs anytime, the view from trains is better than roadways.

Y’all would shite on a $100 cash gift for being too rectangular.

I want a train to Destin.

Good luck with that. There are no rail lines running along the coast east of Pensacola.

After Pensacola, the only east-west rail line runs up on the northern part of the panhandle, through places like Milton, DeFuniak Springs, Crestview, Bonifay and Chipley.

Most folks taking that train are more concerned about the gas money to get there. $15 train ticket vs $50 for a tank of gas

If you are concerned about the gas, what about the other expenses if you didn’t have a car. Uber and Lyft are not free. RTA Bus fare will set you back 3 dollars a day.

Also round trip you are looking at spending 50 dollars on train fare, for business class it is 60 dollars each way.

And if you are a commuter on the train good luck telling your boss that you will come in at about 10:30 and need to leave work for 4 so you can catch your 4:30 train.

$15.00 Amtrak tickets Mobile to New Orleans.

First train out of NOLA is already sold out, granted because of the novelty of it.

The coach tickets I saw to start were $24, and there’s always the more expensive business class.

It's not a commuter train, no one will use it for that.

For a start it is something, time will tell long term. Train all the way to Pensacola or Jacksonville is the obvious longterm goal.

Just going to BR is going to be a bitch because of the NOLA area design.

An eventual commuter train between BR and NOLA would be something totally different.

It’s pretty obvious it’s not a commuter train, at least not terminus to terminus.

It’s a “daycation” or weekend getaway sort of service.
