The check engine light comes on when the SmartStart interlock system detects a problem with the breathalyzer sample and needs a urine sample. Pee in the SmartStart unit and if you're clean the light will go off.

Those things are very simple. I had one before Katrina. The company skipped town after Katrina, and I thought it would be complicated to remove. It took like three minutes to take out. Just two snap clips and one thing wired in a series. Oh yeah, I had to cut some zip ties. That took an extra minute.

I've heard that the humidity in LA is hell on the some of the EcoBost sensors. Maybe the humidity from your breaf is adding to the problem.

In all seriousness I’d be concerned. My 09 Corolla that caught on fire on the new bridge had the engine light on for a few months before that fatal afternoon. Get it checked out or at least avoid the bridge.
