Folks pointing out he was vaccinated are just dumb.
The vaccine reduces chances of catching flu.
Reduces death rate and hospitalization rate.
Is it 100%?
No.
Are seatbelts 100%?
Nope, but I'm still going to use them!
I think you and others are reading way too much into the info provided that he was vaccinated. It's just a piece of information briefly mentioned and some of you are acting as if this is some anti-vaccine advocacy article.

I'll bet seatbelts perform better than the flu vaccine.

But the people pushing the flu vaccine make the claim that while it might not prevent the certain strain, it will reduce the severity of the symptoms....obviously not.

Hell of alot better, as does elderberry and vitamin D3...btw, I am not an anti-vaccine person....I got the flu shot and I take elderberry and D3.

Uh oh, resident OT doctor will have this post removed, while he's filling out opioid prescriptions to a guy who has a hang nail.

Playing devil's advocate here. What does it matter to the piece, if he was vaccinated?
It may not be the intent, but I don't really see what is gained from including the fact that the child was vaccinated has to the story, outside of trying to frame a picture that the vaccination doesn't work or isn't necessary.
We all know the flue vaccine isn't perfect, as there are many strains and they are making an educated guess at best, when predicting what it will be.
ETA: I'm also probably criticizing the OP's wording in the subject more than the article. The article was mostly just a quote from the parents.

No.
The best fight against getting the flu and fighting off the flu once someone gets it is a strong immune system. Those with weak immune systems should take all the additional help they can get for their immune system to keep them in good health.
Those with strong immune systems do not need the flu shot.

Maybe they need more education because 9 times out of 10 the guess is wrong.

same here, only sometimes I get the flu shot, sometimes I don't. But I never get the flu, either.
maybe everyone should just wash their hands and quit touching their faces with dirty hands.

The flu vaccine has absolutely reduced severity in myself and others I know and it was significantly reduced compared to those with no vaccine. This story doesn’t even mention if the flu strain the child had was one that was covered by the vaccine.

See my edit. I think my issue is more how the OP tried to frame it, not so much the article.
The article should have probably mentioned the flue strain, if it was the same or not though. If we are going to talk about them doing their due diligence.

The flu shot is such bs. We wouldn’t accept those results in any other aspect of life. “Here’s your bullet proof vest officer, wear it every day but you still may die”. Why does the flu shot get special treatment?

This is all the article says about vaccination:
quote:
Luca — a charismatic, smart boy who was an “amazing” brother to his three sisters — had just turned 11 in December. His mother claims he was vaccinated against the virus.
The article doesn't make any other comment about it. If it was some anti-vaccine piece, even a light one, I think there would have been something else.
Perhaps it matters because the mother may have thought it important or want people to know that the boy did have the vaccine because she wanted (consciously or not) people to know that she took reasonable steps to protect her child in life like all parents try to do but shite still happens. Maybe the mother or the author wanted people to know that even if you get the vaccine you can still get the flu. Nothing wrong with informing people that the vaccine isn't 100% effective - could even encourage people to continue to take other precautions.
It's a small relevant piece mentioned in passing - that's all.

It’s a good thing that kid had the vaccine, he would be way more dead if he didn’t.

When reading about a kid apparently dying a flu related death, people may wonder if the parents had gotten him the flu vaccine.
Yeah but the implication is the mindset of "the flu shot didn't help so why get one" that so many people ignorantly believe.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you are being sarcastic.

That's a real stretch. I read the mention of the flu vaccine as nothing more than the mother's statement that she did what she could to protect her child. Nothing more nothing less.
Not sure why people are overreacting so much to factual information provided in the article. Don't we want people to know that the flu shot is helpful but not 100% so that people will not assume they don't need to take other precautions to stay healthy, guard against a contagious illness?

The poor boy died. To me, that would tell people the shot isn't worth shite.
