That was my starting salary in a major SE city at age 26, pushing 2 decades ago. single. Roommate. Damn I was much richer back then, all things considered.

Lots of divorced people and single moms. But the main issue is that low income people multiply at a much faster rate (having kids at 17-22 instead of 28-32). That accumulates over a generation or two.

I think there's more dissecting than that.
20% of households are retired so they don't really have income. May have millions in the bank but income is statistically low.
20% of households are going to be young people with roommates and entry level jobs.
Of the 60% of households leftover, 100k income would represent closer to 40% of them, applied from the 20% of the whole figure above.

My wife took a year off from work when we had twins. Back then I made maybe 60k and despite that we had a 3br house, 2 vehicles under 7 years old, cable TV and went on vacation during the summer. The OT is slightly delusional about this topic.

I make 90k and still live paycheck to paycheck because of high mortgage.

Our son hit the 100k+ Mark last year at age 22. He's a welder by trade however Worked 60hr weeks though to get there.
He's on track to exceed last year's total based on his earnings to date for this year. The best thing about this is that he loves what he does for a living.
His goal is to have his own business at age 35 and based in his work ethic, he'll probably make it before then.

Your son is obviously a qualified stainless steel pipe welder. Good on him. I always try to point to people learning a true skill instead of a useless degree in a field that will never give them a job.

Thanks. We kind of knew he wasn't going to be "College Material" so we didn't push that on him. Knowing he liked getting his hands dirty we suggested learning a trade. He enrolled at a Community College and took welding. His instructor recommended him to a company and the rest is history.
