I'll admit that I played my fair share of RPGs when I was a kid.

Honestly, I actually credit that with building my vocabulary as a child. Playing an RPG is basically like reading an interactive novel. Come to think of it, I'd be genuinely curious as to how many typed pages of dialogue a typical RPG contains.

ETA: I just looked it up. Apparently, someone does keep track of these things. Final Fantasy VII has a 344,000 word script. That translates to about 1100-1200 pages. Nice

Well, yeah. That's a big part of the problem. Instead of kids learning how to cope in "boring" situations, we're just slapping a device in their hands. So instead of talking/engaging with other people, they're zoned off in their own world.

You never had a Gameboy? We used them on road trips all of the time.

I had Nintendo, SNES, and N64. Sure, we spent time playing on them, but we spent just as much time doing other stuff outside

I'm 45 years old, so I never did the Gameboy thing growing up.

But I was in the generation that started the whole gaming thing (Atari 2600). And yes, I spent hours on end playing games from the Atari all the way up to the Playstation. You'll never see me talking down from my hilltop.

But you sure do see a lot of hypocrites that conveniently forget they were doing the same thing too. And any kid who didn't play at that age was considered weird, so they're probably weird adults too.

Yeah, no shite.

We rationalize kids using ipads all day by cheering "yeah! they're going to be so tech-savvy and prepared for the new high-tech economy when they're older."

Except they're just playing friggin Angry Birds all day long.

This. It’s BAD. And it’s not just their communication skills that are suffering. It’s everything from fine motor coordination, to focusing attention, to deferring gratification, to spatial orientation, to creativity, to basic reasoning skills. You can spot the kids who get too much screen time a mile away. I mean, hand your average 3-year-old a can of Play-Doh and see what happens. Ten bucks says they have no idea what to do with it.

Realistically, what we’re actually creating is an entire generation who can’t think critically or problem-solve for shite. They know nothing, and on top of that, they’re so disabled by their ignorance that they can’t even think to use the damn smartphone glued to their hand to LOOK UP the things they don’t know.

The only silver lining I can find is that my kids are going to have a lot less competition for good jobs and career opportunities, seeing as how they’re already more competent and self-sufficient than most of the college students I know. Also, if the zombie apocalypse ever comes, even my old arse has a much better chance of survival thanks to all these physically unfit, intellectually paralyzed youngsters who’ll make easy pickins’.

Exactly. Some screen time is fine within limits, and of course it’s not the kid’s fault if the parents don’t enforce those limits. But when you have 10-year-old kids with normal cognitive capacity who are getting special education services because they still can’t hold a pencil, write legibly, or count by 10s, yet they can manipulate 4-5 complex functions on a gaming controller simultaneously to complete multi-step gaming objectives ... that’s not a “learning disability” they’re born with.

but some of you are cracking me up with this high and mighty stance on gaming, when you and I both know damn well that we were almost as bad growing up

When I was growing up, there weren't national ad campaigns encouraging kids to go outside and play for at least an hour every day. It was just something we did without being prompted. Yeah, there would be days we'd stay inside and play video games. But there were also days where we would stay outside until the sun started setting.

It wasn't until about 10 years ago that I really started to stare at my phone/computer and I have noticed the negative effects from it. Sure, it could be age, but about four years ago I started to notice cognitive changes. I wasn't as sharp as I used to be. My speaking ability had degraded and so too had my ability to properly function in social situations.

The technology of today is truly a wonder but it must be used in moderation. I feel like if it's overused it can definitely be a negative on the human brain.

Yes, you're right. Devices have made adults zone out too.

But think of how much worse it is for a child who is (or should be) in the prime of their cognitive development.

I only use it as a positive reinforcement for my daughters learning. Programs such as abc mouse work great. Every time I used the iPad with her has been educational which complemented what i was teaching her such as colors, shapes, numbers, etc.

Whenever I have her at my moms we hardly use it.

My ex on the other hand got her addicted to it early on.

There is a reason high tech billionaires send their kids to speciality low/no tech schools.

I completely agree. My point is that we as a society are doing a horrible job at the whole "leading by example" think. I include myself in that group.

We need a little more analog in our lives.

For me, at least, playing games was something I did with friends mainly. Now, you see kids staring at an iPad, ignoring everything going on around them. Their house could be on fire, and they'd never know
