One time I flew into Iowa and rented a Suburban. It was full of 85% ethanol gas, because there were all these corn ethanol plants in Iowa and that's what they were promoting.
Anyhow, I never looked at the gas gauge. Drove 200 miles down the interstate and ran out of gas. Couldn't freaking believe it. That's how far a Suburban goes on a tank of ethanol.
Never again.

7 mpg lol. So you're telling us that you took out a fuel that is only 30% less efficient than gas that only takes up 10% of the micx and your car is now getting 25% better mileage overall? Even my SLU education knows that those #s don't work.

The people I know that run it have performance cars that are set up and tuned for it. It's a wonderful cheap race fuel.

I get non ethanol gas whenever I can for my car. I never put ethanol gas in my boat or lawn equipment. There is a definite difference is gas mileage with my car. Sometime upwards of 4mpg.

Ethanol gives you less mpg but is equally cheaper. But also gives you more horsepower. I think it burns cooler?

Probably not, depending on what precisely what you mean by this, but it does cause some problems.

This is true as far as it goes. But ethanol presents problems specifically for certain soft materials (rubber, vinyl, etc). Hence there is a need to use slightly more expensive gasket materials and hoses and they tend to break down quicker, even still. Additionally, hoses tend to break down in a manner that can cause issues with ports, valves, etc. via the emulsion that is sometimes created by material dissolved off the insides of the hoses.
Of course many, if not most, of those problems are on older engines. Newer engines have soft parts that are more alcohol tolerant. But Many of the components that work well with alcohol do not work well with gasoline and vice versa.

Again, true as far as it goes but the boat industry was particularly slow in addressing the issues related to alcohol and hoses/soft parts.

Not exactly. It depends on how efficient the engine is as well. An ethanol rich fuel has a higher octane number and thus can be used in engines with a higher compression ratio and extract more energy from this less energy dense fuel.
That being said, E10 aint going to make a difference and you need an engine designed to take advantage of ethanol's properties if using a high ethanol fuel. An engine and gaskets and tubing that won't corrode.

Not to mention that ethanol attracts water from air and we all know how much a fuel system loves having water in it. Combustion and water get along so well.

The assumption is we were talking about similar octane ratings for the same engine. But you hit on a good point regarding power efficiency, all else being equal, higher compression ratio will produce higher power efficiency. That should, theoretically, lead to higher fuel efficiency. Higher compression is the only way to increase the efficiency of the Otto cyle (not the engine as a whole but the efficiency of the thermodynamic power cycle).
And in terms of thermodynamics, lower BTU content always equals lower available power.

Alcohol and water have an affinity for each other, in chemical terms, but one does not "attract" the other. The demo is specific to vented systems and is really kind of a poor representation of even that since you tank would have to have a vent opening equal to at least 80% of the size of the tank to simulate the exposure area presented in the jar. Auto fuel systems are non vented and the vapor pressure of the gasoline will typically mean the tank is primarily filled with gasoline fumes, not air.

Combustion produces water and alcohol mixed with water burns fairly well. It's still not a good idea to add water before the combustion occurs but it is not incredibly damaging in small quantities and sometimes has benefits, though rarely enough to offset potential damage (as I said, not a great idea).
In boats, though, I highly recommend using straight gasoline if it's available.
