I think the 7mpg claim is not legit. Can anyone really claim that ethanol is destroying their engines? I doubt it. Most engine problems I believe are from neglectful owners not doing basic maintenance on boats and cars. And with boats most problems are lack of use and not ethanol.

If you have anything with a carburetor on it and let it sit for a month with ethanol gas in it, you will know what it does to your engine. If you run it constantly, it doesn't nasty up your engine bad but if you let it sit for any time at all you might as well drain the tank before putting it up and you need to even run it out of gas. Ethanol will set up in your carb and put a film on it that is tough to even scrub off.

You might get better mpg, although +7 seems a little high and it's better for the engine, but you need to figure it at mpd (miles/dollar) instead of mpg to see how beneficial it is. Most of the places around here that have no ethanol gas only have it in the 93 octane and it is higher than any of the other 93 octanes with 10%E and significantly higher than 87 octane.

Which if you're using it for any small engines or a boat, then you should go ahead and pay for the good stuff.

But you need to figure it out based on price to see if the 3-4mpg increase is worth the increase in ppg.

So figure up mpd instead of mpg to see how much better you're doing.

I get 4 mpg better with my 4 cylinder Accord with pure gas.

On a side noe regarding fuel...

I have a twin turbo V-8 under the hood and for shits and grins I let the tank get almost empty and then put 10 gallons of 100 octane fuel in it--Holy Crap!!...it was like the motor was on steroids! Every aspect improved, and the power increase was noticeable immediately.

But yeah, ethanol on fuel is the devil.

I've heard that some of the black dudes around here will go the airport and get their fuel for their bikes before they take them to the track to drag race.

Havent seen it with my own 2 eyes so I don't know if it is true or bullshite, but the person that told me is pretty straightforward or I would have just wrote it off as normal everyday bullshite.

I haven't been keeping up with this thread, but there is absolutely no harm in using non-ethanol gasoline.

trouble is, if I remember right, there is only a 3% increase in fuel mileage in using E0 versus E10 based on the actual BTU content of the fuels...basically means it is not nearly worth the extra cost.

I really want to do this because frick big corn and the concept of food as gas and ethanol tears engines up.

But I have no idea how my truck's engine would react to pure gas considering the engine was supposedly designed for ethanol.

Not sure what they are getting from the airport but jet fuel is pretty damn similar to diesel and would probably run a gas motor pretty poorly if at all. It has a big cut of diesel or kerosene in it that slows the burn a lot so a gas motor can't run it and it doesn't have the oil in it to lubricate a diesel motor well.

They make a race fuel designed for highly tuned motors that is about 110 to 120 octane and really clean but I have no idea where to buy it. I don't think you buy it from the airport though.

yea, i'm pretty sure they like to restrict access to highly combustible items near airports.

Ethanol is worse for engines, the environment, and has turned vast parts of the Midwest into a monocultured wasteland of cornfields.

The only supposed benefit is reducing dependence on foreign oil. Otherwise it's just welfare to big ag and corn farmers.

and it comes from Iowa having the first presidential caucus every election cycle. All the candidates promise to continue the ethanol mandate if elected.

You intelligent commentary elevates this thread to a whole new level. I stand by what I said. Most problems with autos are lack of preventive maintenance. With boats its that and lack of use. Not ethanol. Im not an advocate for or against ethanol in gas but the mpg boost claimed by the op is not legit.

You help illustrate my point exactly. Lack of use and improper care. Pure gas left to sit for a month in a carburetor or gas tank will go bad just as quick as ethanol gas.

Your truck would work fine if not better on pure gas. Find the closest gas station near you. LINK

What I don't like is on the gas pumps it says " this fuel contains at least 10 percent ethanol " so how do you really know what percentage ethanol is being used ...

I can say that my water / fuel separater on my boat sure does accumulate a lot of water discharge....

Methanol should get fast-tracked, but it makes too much sense.

I'm talking 1990, and when I say airport, I mean a small airport for personal planes. No commercial stuff. Small town AL.

maybe it was bullshite. I wouldn't bet my life either way.

I think it actually says "up to 10% ethanol" so you should be getting no less than 90% gasoline.

Unfortunately most places around here only have it up to 91 octane.
