1–37. Constructing military correspondence
a. General techniques. When constructing basic military correspondence, focus first on the main point. Use of active
voice is the basic style of Army writing.
b. Specific techniques. Incorporate these plain language techniques to improve effectiveness:
(1) Use short words.
(2) Keep sentences short. The average length of a sentence should be about 15 words.
(3) Write paragraphs that, with few exceptions, are no more than 10 lines.
(4) Avoid jargon.
(5) Use correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
(6) Use “I,” “you,” and “we” as subjects of sentences instead of this office, this headquarters, this command, all
individuals, and so forth.
(7) Write one-page letters and memorandums for most correspondence. Use enclosures for additional information.
(8) Avoid sentences that begin with “It is,” “There is,” or “There are.”
(9) Insert two blank spaces after ending punctuation (for example, a period and question mark).
(10) Insert two blank spaces after a colon.
(11) When numbering subparagraphs, insert two blank spaces after the parentheses.
Just because the military does this does not make it correct

Graphic designer, over 50, 1 space.
Age, ignorance of the law, and “get off my lawn” are no excuses.

There is actually a movie where 1 space after a period instead of 2 is an important plot point in figuring out the mystery.

This is true. I took typing in high school and it was 2 spaces. STILL trying to break that habit.

I use two on a keyboard because it's the way I was taught to type.
On a phone, it's one.

I have never even heard of using 2 spaces after period. I'm 45 with 2 degrees. What is this nonsense.

So is the QWERTY keyboard. It's two spaces

I’m 39 and it’s 2 spaces because I don’t speak Twitter.

2 spaces after a period, exclamation or question mark (end of a sentence). 51, it's the way they taught me in middle school.
Just my own opinion, I'd recommend it if you're typing up something formal or important. If they DON'T care one way or the other, 2 won't bug them, but if they're old-school, then 1 space could be annoying, even on the subconscious level.
I don't usually care when I'm typing online.

Actually it's not a period but a semi-colon

2 spaces for APA format in my doctoral program. Now I do it all the time.

I'm 55 and learned to type on a typewriter. Two spaces were required.
I converted to 1 space a couple years ago.
Kids today learn to "keyboard" instead of "type". shite changes; roll with it.
