A friend of mine hiking in the same area in the 90s caught one swipe from a cougar before it ran off.

The devastation was amazing, it filleted her shoulder.

Cougar Stalks Man on Vancouver Island

Curious creatures. When they learn they can overpower a human, all bets are off.

Cue the bike nerds saying the cougar should have shared the trail.

Damn how many stitches did she require from that one swipe? They have incredible power and claws are like razor blades.

So many years ago don't remember but last time I saw her she had a mess of scars in an area the size of a plate. Big cats are beautiful living monsters.

I did a base to peak to base hike in the Sandias a few months back (solo). A pack of mule deer jetted across the trail about 30 yards in front of me, a mountain lion right in tow. You talk about something that puts you on high alert, that will do it. Dunno if he got one of the deer, so any twig I heard snapping on the way back down made me scan my surroundings. I would have been much easier pickings than a deer.

I will say I feel grateful I got to see one in the wild, but I would have felt better if I had carried my gun.
