I bet some lawsuits are coming

quote:

Nearly half of the senior class at a New Orleans high school was not eligible to graduate this year, despite dozens of those students walking across the stage at a recent commencement ceremony.

The findings of a transcript review, ignited by an investigation into grade-fixing allegations, at John F. Kennedy High School revealed that 87 students in the 177-student senior class were ineligible to graduate.

Of that number, 69 of the ineligible students took part in the ceremony, officials revealed Friday afternoon, and will have to complete additional requirement before receiving an official diploma.

"It is an understatement to say that we, as a school, fell short of our duties to our students and their families," read a press release from the New Beginnings School Foundation, which conducted the investigation.

quote:

As investigators looked into what implications the allegations and other related issues had for Kennedy High seniors, students and parents complained about officials refusing to turn over the students' transcripts and diplomas, throwing college plans into turmoil.

The seniors were given folders with no diplomas at the May 17 graduation ceremony.

quote:

"Because of the actions of adults at our school, families were misled and young people's plans were disrupted ... we apologize deeply for that harm, and promise to do everything we can to give students a clear path forward," the release says.

That's how my high school graduation worked. Apparently they did this to avoid graduation day pranks. We had to go pick up our diplomas a few days after graduation.

So will the solution be to drop the standards or actually making them responsible for their own actions?

the solution is to hire competent adults, not hire someone who was fired for a similar situation

The principal wasn't even on the job for a full year. Plus he was fired from his previous job for cheating on the LEAP test.

quote:

Landry-Walker High School Principal Mary Laurie has been placed on administrative leave as the Louisiana inspector general's office conducts a criminal investigation into questionable test scores at the school. Also suspended: assistant principals Taisha Williams-Payne and Brian Gibson, and former test coordinator Trayvonia Duhe.

Yeah they can’t stop you from graduating if you’ve completed the required course work and testing. They can stop you from walking, but you have your diploma. The lawsuit wouldn’t even make it through the front door of the school board office.

It won't happen, but I'm pretty sure these types of corruption in that school are illegal, and thus, there needs to be a perp walk with some of these teachers and admins.

These kids are going to have to makeup the work. I don't even see how a judge can order certain grades be added to a transcript, which is the real issue here.

That’s a practice that’s almost universal. It insures that presumptive graduates pay their outstanding fines and fees, return their books and gown, etc.

I don't think you are entitled to a diploma. Now, they could not change your transcript or prevent it from being sent out.

If you’ve completed the curricula as specified by the state board of education and the school has submitted that to the state, yes you are. What are they going to do? Make you come back? And take what?

A diploma is just a piece of paper. Not having it doesn't mean you didn't graduate, or you didn't fufill all the graduation requirements.

They can and certainly due hold back diplomas for not paying debts, not library books, etc. Doesn't mean you can't go on to college, etc.

They gonna want to “ walk on that stage “ again if they go back and make the additional requirements.

A diploma is ceremonial, but no college is going to accept somebody without a high school transcript.

Lots of schools give the blank folder at the ceremony and kid has to finish in summer school. But the % of the class here is unreal .

When I was teaching high school, I had this kid in English I and then again in English III the following year. I told him he better check on that one, and he was like, “Nah, the counselor said it was cool.”

Lo and behold, he moved halfway through the year. The student called the school because his new school wouldn’t let him enroll in English III to complete his credit. Shortly thereafter, the counselor stopped by my room with the student’s cumulative folder and said, “I have made a grave error.”
