I still never understood the Baun thing. I remember how excited this board was to add a pass rusher of his caliber, then they threw him at standup linebacker and never had him rush the passer.

PLAY HIM IN THE CORRECT POSITION!

I know it was the 7th round or whatever, but this is the worst draft pick in team history.

No. Far from it. Another poster mentioned the John Mecom years. THOSE were insane and NONE of it made any sense. The one that comes to mind immediately was trading away the rights to Bert Jones to the Colts for Billy Newsome. Larry Burton, the speedster from Purdue with hands of stone. But, the worst, yes, the absolute worst, was wasting a number one pick on Russell Erxlaben, a punter/kicker from Texas. I can't even begin to describe the madness behind that pick. I can't even begin to describe the utter pain that we felt as Saints fans until Jim Finks and Jim Mora came along. It wasn't so bad with Bum Phillips, but it wasn't so good, either. My God, we endured such...pain and hopelessness.

Ok, I can see this.

Mind you I'm nowhere near as smart as the guys taking these players, but I still never understood the Baun thing. I remember how excited this board was to add a pass rusher of his caliber, then they threw him at standup linebacker and never had him rush the passer.

Remember the saints tried to sign Jamie Collins that same year. A guy who had played both 4-3 and 3-4 outside linebacker in his career at a high level. They were fascinated by the thought of getting a linebacker that was a superior pass rusher that they can send after the qb in blitz packages. Baun projected as a guy who would be able to make that transition to the 4-3 but also upgrade the pass rush. However, it hasn’t panned out to this point in his career.

Bum knew talent and got a lot of it that formed the core of Mora's teams.

Going 13-3 and 12-4 is bailing?

He didn't quit working after the No Call. If you think of the word "bailed" in more philosophical or mental terms, the argument makes sense.

We know that CSP did mention coaching at some franchise with "juice". After the "No Call" it was obvious to him that NOLA was not a franchise with any "juice", so, at that point, perhaps the idea of moving on occurred to him.

Now he's with a franchise owned in part by Condoleeza Rice. CSP probably concludes that Rice has more juice than Tom Benson's wife. He might be right. If NFL franchises have "juice", I'd say that the Denver Broncos have more of it than the New Orleans Saints. Is there any comparison at all between the cities of Denver, CO and New Orleans, LA? Back in 1965, the answer was "yes". Here in 2023? It's a joke question. No serious person would even pose such a question. Denver left NOLA in the dust sometime in the 1980s.

He intentionally drafted shitty players so that it would be one less competitive team he would have to face with his eventual new team. #4Dchess

No. But, you can make a pretty good case that he intentionally drafted shitty players and made very questionable cap decisions (Taysom) because he wanted out and was trying to force it.

Ruiz, Turner, and the Taysom Hill contract don't pass the smell test.

Making bad moves intentionally hoping that this would trigger his firing from the Saints?

CSP had three consecutive 7-9 seasons and didn't get fired.

CSP was very close to Tom Benson.

Tom Benson died, as we all know.

CSP maybe wasn’t so close to Tom Benson’s wife.

Haven’t been a fan long huh?

How about the year we could have paired Ricky Jackson with one of if not the best defensive players ever in LT? To pick a running back. Yea saints did that.

Rickey and LT were in the same draft so they would've had to double down picking Rickey in the 2nd. George Rogers was amazing before the coke took over. He just couldn't power thru it like LT could.

Payton is the reason we have a Super Bowl. He’s also the reason we only have one Super Bowl
