I don't think that's possible without at least practices being against real competition.
The one exception would be if a QB was out there looking VERY good. Obviously, that would be the kind of thing that would lift the team immediately above its on paper expectations.
Any commentary like that I think is baseless.

I’m excited for the season but we have an awful fanbase. There’s also notorious wannabe trolls in here that make it unbearable. The truth is we reset and we’re finally gonna rebuild so the gloom of not winning should be had. I’m excited to lose but see what players we have that are foundational pieces. Watch this team start winning the the miserable pieces of shitt will start bitching about us winning because we should be “tanking”. I expect to lose 10-12 games. We just hit the reset button, that’s what they’re supposed to do.

Offense looks great, "Oh no the defense is trash". Defense looks great, "Oh no the offense looks trash". A little back and forth between the 2, "Welp, proof that our team is trash"
It really is difficult to tell just how bad or good any group is when you have as much change over as this team faced in the coaching staff while also making major changes within the starting lineup.

People are glum ( as YOU say) because they are extremely dissatisfied with the QB situation.
By that I mean :
The 2 incumbent QBs and the 3rd QB they just spent a 2nd round pick…..and he doesn’t have the skills to instantly compete.
Now… I understand a rookie QB can’t instantly compete because it takes time.
But what is aggravating the situation severely is ….feedback is coming back from media at practices….that Shough is showing same mistakes scouts pinned on him in their draft evaluations and he doesn’t look good at all.
Even noting he’s running 3rd string behind Haener.

Saints ALSO have one of the least talented rosters in the league.

I’m actually excited the season is starting because:
1. It’s football
2. New coaching staff
I’m not expecting many wins but I do look forward to seeing what our new staff can do, how the team plays, which players emerge, etc.

Having said that, I’m more excited than I’ve been since Sean left…and I think we win maybe 5 games tops. Still excited as heck.
