Which is better? Build roster for a cheap rookie QB or build around an expensive veteran?

Honest question... Which is the better route?
Sign a veteran QB (and the big cap hit that comes with him), then try to build around him?

OR

Build up your roster around a placeholder journeyman like Dalton, then draft a QB when the chance arrives?

I feel like the second option is better. Young QBs (and the perpetually young Brady) have been the big winners. Teams that have overpaid for veterans (or young guys when they hit the first contract renegotiation) seem to struggle.

Depends on our ability to obtain a rookie.

It’s going to be hard to build a really good roster if we overpay for a vet though.

I’d like to see us go cheap for a couple years without having to push too much money forward. Doesn’t mean your team can’t play hard and try to win games. Restock our depth on the lines with the draft. When the money situation becomes a bit more palatable in the next couple years then make a move up for the young qb.

For many teams it's a almost 50/50 question. But for teams in cap hell I would think the draft is a wiser course.

You can tank and end up with Zack Wilson.

it depends on who you can get as a cheap rookie qb. there aren't a lot of solid ones. qb is a rough position. 8 billion people in the world, all the money spent on scouting and development and there have never been 32 solid nfl starting qbs.

easier to build a good roster and find a solid, proficient starting qb.

if i thought we could get williams or maye in the '24 draft i might jump on that bandwagon, i just don't see us being bad enough.

HC Allen needs a Veteran to come in now to win. He doesn't have the time to wait and see with a rookie.

You're completely right but this is a horrible way to build a team.

Either way as long as they produce. The vet is a known commodity but skill players on the cheap are hard to get. A rookie with veteran skill players is great if the rookie becomes a great play caller like Burrow. The Bengals are in a great position because their drafted players have been mostly hits and the most important spots(QB and WR) have been major hits. Now they just have to sure uo the offensive line.

Absolutely depends on the 2 prospective QBs, and the cap space to build with. You mentioned Dalton, but which QB do you have in mind?
In recent years we've seen veterans such as Dalton, Winston, Wentz, Flacco and others that do not produce playoff teams. Then we see some that do on a different team than they were drafted by Tannehill, Brady, Garropolo, G.Smith, Cousins
We've also seen numerous rookie contract QBs fail to make the playoffs too Darnold, Z.Wilson, Carr.
But it does seem like the last few years there are more rookie contract QBs making it to the playoffs Watson, Mahomes, Jackson, Hurts, Herbert hell even Goff & Trubisky made it

The problem I see with the Saints is, with a competent OC, I could see Carr or even Winston leading the Saints to the playoffs even if we find a way to pay Carr say about $27M. Buttt if we do not pay Carr or any other veteran money a lot of money like that, I absolutely do not believe they would spend that kind of money on the necessary pieces to build around a rookie QB. I feel like we'd just take our lumps with the cap and only still move minimum amount to get under

Build around the QB we are already paying on the roster, Taysom and use a vet like Dalton as backup until we get out of cap hell

I know we like to bitch about things, but the Saints line is pretty damn solid. If Penning develops like he should, we're upper tier on the line.

As much as I like Kamara, I think it's time to look for a "real" RB, a good solid 1000 yd guy. That would put you with a good line, a good back, a good young set of WRs, might make the QB less of an issue.

Yet they were all a rookie at one time. Besides, this is not a super bowl team. There is no veteran available that makes it a super bowl team.

The question was do you go with a vet or a place holder and/or rookie and build around them. Personally, I go with the best QB you think is on the board with the 2nd or 3rd round pick. I would hope its Hooker, because at 25 yrs old, you start him immediately and within 8-10 games you probably have a good idea if he is the guy to build around. This would allow you to cut Dalton, and worst case, if he isn't the player he looked to be at Tennessee, you likely suffer thru '23 and are looking to draft a QB early in the '24 draft.

I love Hill for what he is, but he is not a full-time QB you build a team around.

He would be a bridge to a top 5 pick, not a guy we build around for the future.
