I asked a few weeks ago where you ranked Carr as far as returning starting QBs in the NFL (consensus was top 20; between 13-17). I trimmed that list down to returning starting NFC QBs.

So where do you rank Carr?

Top 5
Aaron Rodgers (???)
Jalen Hurts
Matthew Stafford (older)
Kirk Cousins
Jimmy Garoppolo (???)

Top 10
Derek Carr
Dak Prescott
Daniel Jones
Jared Goff
Geno Smith

The rest
Andy Dalton (???)
Brock Purdy (???)
Jameis Winston (???)
Baker Mayfield (???)
Justin Fields
Kyler Murray
Taylor Heinicke

Stafford May be done, and Rodgers may go to the AFC. No idea where Jimmy G lands, but if he’s not healthy, that makes Carr a top 3 QB in the NFC IMO.

It puts into perspective how horrible the NFC is. Doesn't matter where he places on that list. It's a horrible division right now for QBs. Come playoff time he'll get bounced 1 and done every year once he meets up with better defenses.

I also can about guarantee our defense will not be as good as this board thinks this coming season. 1 year too late.

When Dalton went against Cousins

Dalton 20/28 236 8.4 1 0 108.6

Cousins 25/38 273 7.2 1 1 84.7

So Red Rifle outperformed Cousins and Carr this year head to head by a pretty good margin. Why everyone wanted him gone so bad?

NFC is butt. That is a good thing for the saints. He is easily 6-8 or even higher. He is already the best QB in the division.

No doubt. Which is why getting Carr was a smart move with the current NFC landscape. May not have been as prudent in other years. But just get into the playoffs and you have a chance of getting hot and going on New York Giants (Eli) type run. Certainly unlikely, but at least possible. And it wouldn’t have been with Dalton.

Maybe. It’s possible Cam, Davis, and Tyrann regress significantly. But if they give us anywhere near what they did last year, I don’t see why we’d not field a good defense. You’ve got to expect corner to be a lot better with Taylor coming into his 2nd year, Adebo with another year of development (I really think his camp injury bothered him all season—he was the star of it before he got hurt), and assuming we get a healthy Lattimore.

Could add a safety in the draft, but you have to think Maye will be healthier and better (or at least not worse). Kaden Ellis looks like a beast at LB, and Werner was playing great before he got hurt.

We’re losing Davenport, who’s great when he plays, but never does, so not really gonna miss much production from him. Hopefully Turner figures it out and gets healthy, but he had almost no
production last year, so anything he gives us this year is just a bonus. DT is really the only glaring hole on defense, but the way Carr’s contract is structured we’ve got a little over $20 million in cap space if we want to use it. Should be plenty to address DT, and then we can supplement with BPA in the draft.

You may be right and the defense may take a big step back, but I don’t think there’s any reason to assume that happens unless we’re plagued by injuries or our vets just fall off a cliff.

Jimmy G isn’t close to the player Kyler Murray is.

He had a Oline decimated by injuries and then tore his ACL. He was a pro bowler the two years prior.

Ranking could mean a lot of different things.

How would a list look if you ranked:

you need one win.
you play the most games
you win the most
you win /go to the most playoffs
best value
best for Saints

Carr is around 6th for me.

This should be where his ranking drops the most. We're in cap hell and having to restructure everyone's contract....which will only further put us in cap hell. And now we're paying a guy $35 mill next year whose excuse for poor play last season is the same exact problem we have in NOLA.

But 6th in the NFC is reasonable.

honestly, I think its Hurts right now, then everyone else.

Even the bigger names are guys on the decline. There doesnt seem to be a clear pecking order.

For now, Hurts is really the only QB worth noting in the NFC for the next five years. And his health will be volatile given his playing style

The rest are all jumbled together. Carr with CSP would be contenders. With Allen, let’s just start by setting our sights on the division

Way better and more proven than Daniel Jones, who just got 4/$160MM

Finally, someone with logic on this board.

You’ll see most analysts, who aren’t exactly huge fans of Carr, admit he’s in that Dak, Cousins tier.

Don't disagree with this.
