Not from everything I've been reading. Seems he's definitely been jumping out. Which is, of course, awesome.

Rankins is sliding down because Onyemata has been coming on strong and taking snaps with the first team a lot. Onyemata has the size and strength to be really destructive in collapsing the pocket if the light has come on for him now.

i wonder if Rankins can become trade bait? not saying i'd like to see him go, but flip him for a 2nd which could become a conditional 1st if he hits certain marks?

Yeah, I'm thinking they probably will down the road because it's looking like, well, I'm not calling him a bust, but he's just not living up to expectations.

Rankins has only himself to blame. I’ve been harsh on him for a year and maybe some people will start to come around

I'm not too harsh on rankins. He's an above average dt, he's just not a game changer.

Thats to be expected, too many wanted to call him Aaron Donald.

People were calling him Aaron Donald?
Crazy talk.
Onyemata def has more burst than Rankins.
Don't see anyone giving up a 2bd for him he hasn't done much.
This will pretty much be a make or break year for him.
I think this year is going to tell a lot about what kind of career he will have

Nothing up with him. Saints are just about 90 deep with NFL quality players. He’d probably be an important backup or even starter on some teams. Saints are just the deepest team in the league. Cuts really are going to be tough this year.

Year 3 has always been the defining year for DTs, QBs, and Wrs., so the jury is still out on Rankins.

Yep, add C and MLB to the list. DTs on average take longer to develop than any position besides QB. I've heard coaches even mention more like 4-5 years in the NFL.

ETA: I think many WRs can hit their stride in year 2 though.

He just hasn't blown up in training camp like many were hoping.

As for Rankins, he was really good last season despite mediocre numbers.

quote:

But aside from that one highlight, a lot of Saints fans would probably not notice the good work of Rankins in Saints’ defensive front. While the Saints secondary and Cameron Jordan received most of the attention in 2017 (and rightfully so), only Jordan and Defensive Rookie of the Year hopeful Marshon Lattimore finished the season with a higher AV than Rankins in 2017. Speaking of AV, of the six defensive players selected ahead of Rankins in the 2016 NFL Draft, only Jalen Ramsey and Joey Bosa had a more productive 2017 for their teams. Rankins had a higher AV than the likes of Leonard Floy, Eli Apple, and Vernon Hargreaves III, all picked directly ahead of Rankins in the first round. And remember, 2017 was Rankins’s first full season in the NFL. If he continues to make strides like this into next season, the Saints have another great, young building block on defense for years to come.

LINK

("AV" = approximate value, a metric from the very legit Pro Football Reference, similar to PFF's grades).

DT's rotate a ton, so it's absurd to talk about trading Rankins. Davison isn't going to be out there on 3rd and 5+. Be happy to have 2 potentially great DT's and a competent 1-tech.

And I'm really excited about Hendrickson (who looks more than competent inside), but I'd like to use him as a versatile backup that sees fewer snaps than he maybe should. He feels like the heir apparent to Jordan, and I'd like him to be a reasonable cost re-sign in 2021 to take over the LDE position when Jordan is 32 (though strongside DEs and DTs do have fairly long shelf lives). And I really don't mean to jinx anything, but Jordan has legit played ~95% of ALL defensive snaps for the Saints in his career. He hasn't missed a game and rarely comes off the field. A career playing that percentage of snaps has been impossible since back in the 70's when guys like Jon Voight coached and would just give the player some ludes and crack so that they could play through severe concussions and amputated legs and shite. Hendrickson will be important filling in if he does get hurt, which is why you don't want to trade Rankins and rely on Hendrickson as an interior rotation guy.

ETA: Just remembered that Rickey Jackson was an exception to the never coming off the field thing. Dude pretty much had his face ripped off in a car accident in the mid 80's and IIRC had 10 sacks in the game the day after the accident.

I feel like I could make as many jinx comments as possible and do some stereotypical voodoo stuff on him that ABC would show coming back from a commercial break, and it STILL wouldn't make a difference. Guy is a monster. But even if he literally never "misses time" in his career, a good backup giving him some breaks would just make him even more effective. I wish that we could have a 100% Okafor and a more seasoned Davenport, but I pretty much love our DL right now. It's not going to be the best in the league, but it has a shitload of talent, versatility, and depth. I'm excited.

ETA: Thinking that Jordan will never miss time in a 10+ year career reminds me of this:

As much as I love Cam and I am glad the rest of the guys are now starting to come on like Onyemata, Hendrickson, and gang. I'm even more excited about the LB'ers with D Davis added to the mix of Klein, Anzalone, Craig Robertson, and Manti Te'o.
