What was the point of QB draft choices like Sean Mannion, Garrett Grayson, Ian Book, etc.?

Not sure what payoff the Saints were honestly expecting to get from these choices. They were all wasted at a times when the Saints obviously had other needs. An extra contributor or two could have made the difference and pushed us over the top to the Super Bowl during the 2017-2020 seasons when we were contenders. Oh what could have been.
Was it really because Sean loved those guys because they reminded him of himself? That’s so goofy if true. That’s got to just be a rumor.

same point as any other draft pick.

They were looking for a Diamond in the Rougth. Remember Brady went in the 6th round and wasn't all that highly though if when he came out of Michigan.

I doubt that was it. More than he thought he could get the most out of guys with average physical tools with his coaching/scheme. Having Brees have the success he did probably also contributed to it.
But the margin for error is so small with guys like that, and neither one was all-world in college…I tend to think hubris did get the best of Sean in those 2 instances.

Payton Turner was drafted because Sean likes that name.

Combo of Sean getting cute thinking he make the next Brees, and hoping to land a cheap back-up for Drew.
While I agree 100% they would have been better served grabbing a player that may be able to compete at a position of need. Think of it this way, imagine having a back-up QB on a rookie deal for 3-4 years instead of spending a few million on vet backups. And if that guy ends up being good enough, if Brees steps away you have a cheap replacement

Now do the hundreds of other failed qb picks around the league for each team.

I think this is close to the right answer. Finding that diamond in the rough/a cheap reliable backup.
I'd be willing to say that it is likely a combo of various factors: we didn't have draft-able grades on other guys at those slots, couldn't trade down for the value we wanted, or liked enough of the pre-draft tape to take a flyer on some of these guys.
Manion was drafted by the Rams though.

Same reason why the patriots drafted a qb that split time at michigan

I always roll my eyes when people get all bent out of shape about an extra 3rd or 4th rounder. Sure, we maybe could’ve got an extra contributor. But it’s also worth the gamble for a QB if we think he can be developed into something. It’s not like every single draft pick works out even if it’s at traditional positions

Love the takes on this board. This guy thinks a 3rd and 4th round pick cost us championships, while others think we should’ve traded up in the 1st round to take Drew Brees’ successor and waste his rookie contract sitting on the bench.

Just be glad we didnt Jordan Love it. Imagine the melt if we would have taken him round 1. Which a few people wanted

Why do you continue to post shitty topics. You do understand that late picks usually aren’t going to be hall of famers right? Do you have any idea how the draft works? It’s clear you know very little about football so I’m just going to assume that’s why you don’t understand the draft.
You don’t hit home runs on every pick. Later picks are just picks where you are hoping to get lucky and find a diamond.

Later draft picks are better spent on positions other than QB. There aren’t very many Tom Brady’s around.

Hoping one would work out.
The same as anyone drafting a QB post first round, or even first round.

You fail when you assume he was drafting these guys to be starters

We didn't need a Brady when we used those picks. Sometimes you just need a Luke McCown or Chase Daniel to be a serviceable back up that doesn't eat salary cap.
If they happen to become starter quality then they have surpassed their draft expectations and every body in the Front Office gets a pat on the back and a contract extension. If they flame out, then they were just a mid round pick. If a QB never sets foot on the field in a real game, they are still providing value at practice and in the QB room. Is your question even real? What is the point in drafting anybody at positions with a current starter in place?

Because you can always use a solid backup. But what if that guy turns into Tom Brady, Russell Wilson, Dak Prescot....hell, I'd even take a Kirk Cousins at this point.
