This. People forget how good Jeff Blake was that year. He was 7-2 when he broke his leg and was arguably in the MVP race. The Saints lost that game, Brooks went 3-3 as a starter and backed into the first playoff win in team history, and Blake was suddenly done as a starter.

The Saints started the year 1-3 and then he got inured in the loss to the Raiders. Brooks' first start was at St. Louis in a huge comeback win. Brooks had flashes of being a great QB in his rookie year and the Saints offensive production increased with him.

The next years...not so much. The backward pass to Deuce at SD for about negative 40 yards still makes me roll over.

You’ve never made a fool out of me in any thread. You’re the dumbass that doxxed yourself posing a question on the La fishing fb page then turning around and posting the exact same thing on the OB. Real creative screen name Karl

Haslett and the front office seemed to care a lot more about measurable than play on the field. Witness Tebucky Jones and cutting Sammy Knight.

Yes, they may have started 1-3 but Blake led them on a 7 game winning streak after that, and before his injury.

this caused me to go down a rabbit hole and look at those draft classes, I was a kid then so I'd always convince myself every pick we made was going to be a stud...Some names that stick out I thought were going to be good

James Allen
Keyou Craver
Mel Mitchell
JT O'sullivan
Cie Grant
Montrae Holland
Kareem Kelly
Talman Gardener
Colby Bockwoldt
Rodney Leslie
Alfred Fincher
Chase Lyman
Adrian McPherson

also who could forget the whole Dale Carter fiasco? Big FA addition Albert Connel stealing from the locker room? Ah good times

Of that list, I think O’Sullivan was the only one to have a career of sorts. Didn’t he start games for the Niners or Rams? Maybe Montrae Holland had a few starts at guard, but I cannot remember.

As far as the others, those are some names I’ve forgotten. But the ones that stand out were Chase Lyman, who had a dead man’s ACL in his knee after multiple tears, and Adrian McPherson, who famously lined up under guard and had his RB run up to point him in the right direction. Plus, his career ended not from action but the Titans mascot running over his foot.

Such great drafts, and I remember Haslett always saying all his picks had a first round grade on them. God he was awful with the draft.

I think JT even has a QB scouting/coaching service now

I really thought Talman Gardener was going to turn out to be a hidden gem. I think it was because SR.com people would attend camp and hype up every fricking rookie in their practice write ups

Very true. Every prospect we joke about like Walter Thomas or Onome Ojo all got their hype from SR.com.

I will say though one poster there noted Hasletts drafts always followed a theme of sorts. Like I remember every draft had a player with a name that Buddy D would struggle pronouncing. Ojo, Bockwoldt, and a few others.

So was I. The crowd was chanting "We Want Jake!" during timeouts and change of possessions.

Sammy Knight had 2 INTs if I remember correctly. Also his last game in a Saints uni.

incredible

it makes you think.

you know in 2000, no one was expecting anything from the Saints, but they brought game.

and then when other teams adjusted and took them seriously after that, the Saints didn't make the playoffs after that.

Edit: under Haslett
