If we can get Fuaga, capable average LG, McCoy, Ruiz (step up your shite) and a getting better Penning at RT... we're building the blocks of what can be offensively on top of what appears to be a strong defense.

Its really the biggest hurdle that matters is getting this OL capable enough.

Would be a dramatic difference if our Olinemen started playing much better.

I don't mean to be negative but it looked to me like they gave Penning a TON of help with TEs chipping or fully staying in to pass block.

Half this board would still be upset if won a super bowl if Derek Carr was the QB

I am happy with what I saw from the starters

Play calling can mask some of the OL problems we have.

Run game looked legit and can open up the pass game

Defense looked good. If Chase Young stays healthy the defense should keep us in most games even if it takes the offense some time to get going

well last week i was asking myself, why are we helping chip on fuaga's side and not penning's side.

The first two drives were 3 & out where the Saints gained a grand total of 11 yards. Then they have one really good drive and half the board is pumped!!! Holy overreaction

It's the preseason. The Saints offense probably isn't as bad as everyone thought they will be after last game. But one drive against about 50% of SF's starters doesn't mean it is going to be really good either.

I do think you can start getting somewhat of a sense of the pros/cons of the offense. Pass protection will likely be an issue all season that Kubiak will have to work around as best as he can. The OL isn't good in that area and Carr isn't great at maneuvering in the pocket. However, the Saints have showed some promise in the running game. The OL seems better suited there, and Williams, Mims, even Robinson have looked solid, along with Taysom HIll..RB1. IF the Saints can have a solid running game, it should help out the weak passing game a lot.

As is the case with most things in life...the outlook for the Saints offense likely lies somewhere in the middle between people wanting to jump off a bridge following last week's game, and those "super excited" following ONE drive yesterday...ignoring the first two.

This may be a year where the recipe for the Saints to have success is (1) play great, top 10 defense; (2) control the clock/possession with a solid running game; (3) play action off the running game to hit a few deep shots. If Carr is having to throw it 35-40 times a game, the Saints are probably going to lose most of those. If he's attempting 27-32 passes, the Saints will probably be in the game.

i know we bag on the guy, and it is rightfully earned, but we have to give props where deserved - was he perfect? no, but he was vastly improved over last week.

not saying he has turned the corner, but he is showing signs that he may be getting better, and as fans - that is all we can really hope for.

Hadn't seen too many "super exited" posts about the offense. Mainly just relieved that we may not be absolute trash. A lot of the optimism I am seeing has centered around the o-line (specifically Penning) showing they may actually belong on an NFL field which should give this offense an opportunity to do something.

But I do find it funny that we should give very little weight to the 1 successful drive, and (as you infer) put more weight on the first 2 drives just because.

We also started inside our own ten on every single drive with the starters.

I’m not saying Trevor Penning hasn’t been a disappointment but he was always supposed to take multiple years to develop. We reached on a guy from Northern Iowa then threw him into the fire and started to attack him for not being a day 1 starter.

Penning got more help then the Dems get from media. Every down TE chipped. Penning is a big failure so far. I am hoping he can get his balance right. His balance seems to be his issue. Geaux Saints!

Penning received tons of help last night.

I get the Penning hate, believe me I get it.

Foskey, Ruiz and Turner piss me off just as much as Penning lol

Foskey is literally never in correct position and looks slow af

Ruiz.....everyone knows.

Turner never stays on the field and can't beat our Granderson. Turner was close again to making plays but never does. Hopefully we can get 8 games out of our 1st rounder from 4 yrs ago.

Thats a good sign and a indicator of good coaching. A good coach will work with what he has.

Our offense is going to be run and screen heavy to setup the play action. That's great because we will have lots of TE's on the field to help Penning with double teams and chip blocks before they release for passes. It will also help set a aggressive atmosphere for the team.

Since we know we have a suspect o line a bad coach would line up in 4 wide's and 5 wide's and leave our olineman on islands. We will do some of that but it should not be our primary formations with this o line.

So we Can’t Throw at all to our Tight Ends because they need to stay on the line to help Penning block ????

What The Fuuuukkk !!

It will be play action stuff. Like chip the DE to help Penning and then sneak the Te's out. It's just the way its going to be with a subpar oline.

The main positive for Penning last night is he was aggressive. When he lets the DE attack him he gets off balance and it gets embarrassing for him. He is better and looks like he might have a place in the NFL when his is the one attacking the DE.

Penning is god awful even with the help he had yesterday. On the screen to Williams he got pushed so far back he got tangled into Williams and luckily Williams didn’t fall when it happened.

That's simply not true. I think I noticed 3 plays in pass protection where the TE helped him. He wasn't a pro-bowler last night, but he was a notch above serviceable, which is a vast improvement from last week. Even the plays he had help on, you can say the coaching vastly improved to understand when/where they need help and to call the right protections and they did. Whine elsewhere

I mean, that is literally what you want at most from Foster Moreau. Juwan will be lining up as a wideout most of the time anyway.
