We are fools if we acquire Carr, Mayfield, etc.

The last five Super Bowls have essentially had a requirement for elite quarterback play to win. For the next decade, whatever team comes out of the AFC will have one of the best five or six quarterbacks in football.
You simply are not going to beat any of those teams on the biggest stage without quarterback play to match that. The NFL won’t even want you in the game without it.
So to sign one of these veteran quarterbacks that, at best, might be slightly above average….. is a generational waste of time. If you don’t have an elite franchise quarterback, all efforts need to be diverted to the draft to look for one.
The days of having a fighting chance with great defense and an average QB are over and may never come back.

So what do you recommend chief?
Posted on 2/14/23 at 11:50 am to Brightside Bengal
No one is saying they should be our longterm answer at QB.
You can actually do both. Sign Carr and continue to look for your future. He's probably the perfect bridge to our next guy.
We are not going to be bad enough to get a QB in the top 5.

Exactly every idiot that says we don’t need Carr etc cannot tell you who we need, their response is to tank and draft Caleb Williams because he’s sooo elite. Morons

Even if we do tank this team is still better than the the teams picking in the top 5 lol. We would win 7-8 games again and be where we are now.

What if tanking to get Caleb Williams actually is the correct answer, and is the highest chance of success for the next three years?
Do we just dismiss what might be the best course of action?

So, should we just plan to go into the 2023 season without a QB? You also have no idea what Carr, Mayfield, Dalton, Garappolo... will sign for this season. So, it would be hard pressed to say any of them will be foolish (since you need a QB) without knowing the terms.
Also, and while we had 2 of the top 5/6 QBs in this game; at the same time we were also a game away from having a back-up QB representing one of the teams. And, we're only 1 year away from Matthew Stafford being a SB winning QB.

He's probably one of the people that think Joe Burrow is attainable.

Get real. The Brock Purdy led 49ers never were going to have a chance in the NFC champ game. And Stafford was a top 6 talent qb that was hamstrung in Detroit. His one year with the Rams and his play in the Super Bowl was elite.

We were sure close this past season but gave that pick away to Philly.

Doesnt matter if we dismiss it or not as fans.
Loomis and Company had said last year they plan on competing. It doesnt matter what you or I want. They are not tanking.
Unless they start selling off high priced players, id get used to the fact that we are probably looking at 8 or 9 win seasons.
Not telling you that you are wrong in your mentality. But they are not wired to want to throw seasons away.

quote:Do you think these grow on trees? They rarely ever hit free agency, and drafting one is like finding a needle in a haystack most drafts outside of the top 10 picks. Are you one of those fans that just says "tank" purposely every year? I really wish y'all would STFU.
elite franchise quarterback

Sure, but also were as close to beating Tampa and making that pick much much worse.

Sign Carr and draft Hooker NOT Caleb Williams

Doesn't dispute the fact that they were 1 game away

So, you're saying that as long as the team has a QB with the right measurables, we only need them to have that one great year and we have a shot? Becasue while stats are only part of the equation, Stafford did have years in Detroit that were statistically similar to what he did for the Rams.
AND, Carr has had seasons similar to Stafford, he just never had the TD numbers (also never had Calvin Johnson, but that's for another thread

Didn’t Nick Foles just win a super bowl? It can be done without an elite qb.

I don't believe this at all.
You field an elite defense and you can beat an elite QB 8 of 10 times.
If you're giving up 38 and 35 points you do not have an elite defense, thus you may need an elite QB to help you win.
