JAYLON SMITH, LB

The NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah compared Smith to Patrick Willis, which would be music to 49ers’ fans ears. Even if that is setting the bar extremely high, there is no question that Smith could be an impact NFL defender. He can be a touch slow off the snap, but he erases any deficit with his closing speed.
i'll take a P Willis type player.

Do we have a #1 pic from Seattle?

Saints need meat. D or O line.
Along with RB, WR might be the most overrated position in all of football. Teams can win and win big with avg. WRs. Seattle, New England, Indianapolis, San Francisco in recent years. Carolina, New England, even Green Bay (without Nelson) are all undefeated to this point and all are relatively mundane at the WR position. Hell, for all of the Saints great run they had avg. WRs and their most recent 1st round WR isn't keeping them from being a 1-4 team.
There are several positions more important that WR. They can draft a 5 WRs next year, and it won't make a bit of difference until the problems in the front 7 and OL are fixed.

With Brees' arm strength on the decline, he needs more WR talent that he did early in his career. Elite WRs do not bust nearly as often in today's NFL (recent elite WRs are Julio, AJ, OBJ, Cooper, Demaryius, Hopkins etc.), so I don't think we should pass on Treadwell or Boyd if available. Hell, the only bust I can think of recently is Justin Blackmon, and that was due to off-field issues.
We don't need a left tackle so there's no need to draft OL in the Top 10 this year.
I agree that DL is the "1B" position we should be looking at early in the draft.

Our team is next to last in current power rankings. So we go WR with a top 3 pick. The following year when we pick top 3 again. Do we go WR again?

I think his point was that we should be able to address Guard later in the draft and in FA

Cam Jordan has fought a lot of double teams, nobody else can win 1v1s though
He is seeing the most doubles of anyone on the D, but he isn't beating them or the 1v1s. 8th highest paid DE in the league ought to be producing at a higher rate. 81 players have more than 1 sack and I'm pretty sure many of them are facing more double teams than Cam. Cam needs an interior push and presence on the other side. Kikaha seems to be collapsing the pocket, but QB's are routinely able to step up into the pocket or get around Jordan or Kikaha as sole members of our D in the backfield.

Yeah pretty much - WR is a safe pick early in the draft. OL is a concern but guards aren't top 5/10 picks... maybe if we trade down significantly OG would be in play.
I think Bosa barring a surprise isn't falling beyond the top 2 or 3 picks, so I don't think he'll be in play for us.
Nkemdiche is a bit riskier due to his physical ability out-weighing his production in college, but as others have said he'll command double teams at the point of attack, which opens up sack opportunities DEs and more tackles for LBs.

Is it fair to say that based on personnel, we likely stay with the 3-4 when Ryan is inevitably let go? If so, Nkemdiche could make a world of difference. I wouldn't be unhappy if we took Treadwell and Sheldon Day in 2nd round.
Not sure if the front office could swallow this pill and admit they were wrong once again, but would honestly love taking VH3 as a cog for us in the future. He's obviously a ballhawk and gamechanger but is supposed to be good off the field, etc.
And let's get Vadal or someone like him in the 3rd round please.

Trade back a couple spots...pick up an extra Round 2 guy...and take the Biltetnikoff winner later in the First Round.
Great route runner
INSANE catch radius
Sticky hands
Makes ridiculous adjustments while elevated
QUIET, HIGH-CHARACTER GUY
2 feet down in the back corner for the TD
More of the same

Agree. You can pick up a guard in the later rounds. You can even find decent centers on the street.

Love Doctson - he is a beast. I slightly worry about him being the product of the TCU air raid system, but yeah, he is a joy to watch.
Very similar to Treadwell - doesn't have elite speed but makes up for it in ball skills and playmaking ability.

I am not too keen on spending a top 5 pick on a WR unless he is heads and tails above anyone else on the board.
I would much rather invest that pick in a DT or LB, or trade down and address the G position.

Sure. But how often is an "elite WR" the difference between a bad ,or even just OK team, and a great team?
Watkins, Evans and Cooks were all 1st rounders in 2014. Their teams are all still miles away from competing for championships because there are so many holes elsewhere. On the other hand, Benjamin is out for Carolina this year, and they are moving along just fine.
Go back to 2013. Austin and Patterson were taken in the 1st round, but neither has been the deciding peice to make the Rams or Vikings great teams. Hopkins was also taken in the first round. While he's been good, the Texans are awful
2012. Blackmon is out of the league. Wright and Floyd have been ok, but certainly not difference makers. Really, you have to go back to Green and Jones to find recent real difference makers at WR. But those teams are good, especially the Bengals, because they are stronger at other spots.
The bottom line is that you can find plenty of WR in later rounds who are good enough for a team to win big as long as they have the important pieces around them (QB, OL, front 7-especially DL). The Saints are getting pounded at the LOS this year (on both sides of the ball). Until those issues are addressed, the impact of a new WR will be minimal.

We aren't drafting one player and then becoming a contender. This is a rebuild. You hope he becomes elite in three to four years when we've had a chance to address all the other holes on this team. It doesn't matter the position or player, this team needs a serious influx of talent. You take the best DE, DT, WR, CB, OLB or OG available and repeat each round.
