re: Was Olive down?

The DB’s leg barely skimmed him.
If it did, it was barely because the CB was holding his hands to his chest trying to NOT touch Olavae as he was going down. In fact, he was trying to avoid touching Olavae at all during the catch. Perhaps a whistle blew and it was a moot point, but had Bell picked up the ball quickly instead of being uncertain it was a fumble it would have been an interesting review. One that could have been game changing considering the Saints offense had done very little to that point in a 6-6 game.
It was a great catch. But there are few things more selfish on the field than these dumbasses being so determined to celebrate a big play that they ignore everything around them. Same with guys who are so eager to drop the ball upon scoring that they drop it before crossing the goal line. You have TEN YARDS in the endzone to safely drop the ball. What is the rush to do so immediately upon scoring?
Frankly, there should never be a reason a WR spikes the ball after a catch in the field of play (outside the endzone). The "reward", which is nothing, doesn't outweigh the risk, a purposeful fumble...even if that risk is very low. You'd had to lose a game over such stupidity.

Looked at this several times today - it is 100% a fumble. Olive was not touched by panthers #23 after he made the catch. All of the contact came before Olave had possession. He got up without being touched and let the ball go, had the Panthers picked it up in bounds and challenged it would have been their ball.
Big debate about that today on the Saints FB post showing that catch. It was absolutely a fumble - celebrations aren't "giving yourself up" neither is diving to catch the ball.

The play stands as called!

Rewatch it and you'll see he was not touched once he had possession. The contact came prior to that. Rules are touched upon possession, not prior to. He's lucky that ball went out of bounds, because that would've been overturned on replay if that Panther defender picked it up

This is a big issue with Olave
Oftentimes he is too satisfied with just the catch.
He routinely runs out of bounds with no one around him instead of pursuing extra yardage/td’s and then last night, he gets up and spikes the ball and beats his chest instead of getting up and trying to score a TD.
He’s playing better, but he needs to learn how to never be satisfied. Once Olave catches the ball, the play is essentially over bc he’s already planning on ending the play, to celebrate as soon as possible. It’s a bit annoying and it almost cost us the game last night.

Let's all pray to baby Jesus that he Listens to you on how to be a pro. The season may hang in the balance!

The going out of bounds is something that the Saints coaches must not only teach, but encourage to limit hits and possible turnovers.

He weighs 185 pounds, I’d prefer him run out of bounds so he’s still around in December. Quit trying to equate to Mark Ingram running out of bounds short of a crucial 1st down.
Maybe he felt the DB’s foot hit him while he was in possession of the ball on the ground as the video shows. He’s not as retarded as you.

Relax man
I was vibing with you until you just called me retarded
It was a bang bang play. There is no way he should’ve gotten up and did what he did.
He still needs the college rules coached out of him. It was an outstanding catch. But he’s got to learn to finish the play without relying on someone barely touching him and/or his spike rolling out of bounds.
Also in the same game you mentioned, Ingram was injured. Also, Olave dropped a ball in the red zone that cost us potentially 4 points in that game. That loss was a team failure, not just on old, injured, making league min, Mark Ingram.

quote:Negative. You can fumble forward, and passing has intent behind it. His intent was obviously not to pass, and no one would EVER rule it a pass.
Would have been illegal forward pass and not a fumble anyway.
IF he was not touched down, and I don't care either way because the outcome would be the same given what followed, he fumbled forward and you get possession at the spot of the fumble and not where the ball goes out (as opposed to fumbling backwards, where you get the ball where it goes out).
This is literally the play where they say you cannot advance the ball on a fumble.

I went to the Olive Garden on my honeymoon. It was awesome.
Haven’t been to one since, but will always cherish Olive Garden.
