Update: Peat fat in 2015/Schefter reporting trade discussions for Ron Leary.

Adam Schefter is reporting on NFL Insiders on ESPN that the Saints are making trade inquiries and are in discussions for the Cowboys guard Ron Leary.
The Cowboys had placed a $2.553 million second-round tender on Leary. The asking price must be steep. This might mean Peat will be the Saints RT.

An immeasurable desire to improve and an offseason of being in the New Orleans Saints' conditioning program have slimmed the 2015 first-round pick to a much closer approximation of his listed 6-foot-7, 316-pound frame than he likely ever was as a rookie.
He may be a first round starter, after all, he was just really fat and out of shape.

An immeasurable desire to improve and an offseason of being in the New Orleans Saints' conditioning program have slimmed the 2015 first-round pick to a much closer approximation of his listed 6-foot-7, 316-pound frame than he likely ever was as a rookie.

And this, too, can be added to the list of accomplishments that Peat has achieved as he prepares to enter his second season: He is being counted on to start for New Orleans.
So while the word "svelte" isn't applicable - he's still an offensive lineman, after all - the word "starter" certainly appears to be.
During organized team activities, the position is right guard and though Peat doesn't have game playing experience there, he does have it at almost every other offensive line position.
In 12 games played last season, with eight starts, he opened twice at left tackle and four times at left guard, and played all but the first snap at right tackle in the season finale. He also made several starts as an extra tackle.
In training camp last year, he received reps at every line position except center. In training camp this year he figures to be among the five best linemen and when the stated goal is to have the five best on the field, it means Peat figures to be there among them.
"I think he is doing real well," Coach Sean Payton said Thursday, after the Saints finished their first three-day OTAs. "He finished strong last season. Obviously, he played at a few different spots a year ago.
"He is in great shape, and I think that is going to serve him well as we are in these practices and as we move into training camp. Certainly we see him starting. Whether it's at right guard or right tackle, we've got some time and some flexibility with regards to that. I'm encouraged with how he's progressing."
The fact that Peat, the No. 13 overall pick in '15, is working under the assumption that he is a starter isn't much of a surprise. When the Saints drafted him, the thought was that he would become a starter.
quote:
But the belief was that he soon would be opening at right tackle. Although Peat said he only has played left tackle in his career, Terron Armstead is entrenched in that positon for the Saints, leaving Peat as the heir apparent to Zach Strief at right tackle.
However, Strief, who has started every game he has played at right tackle the last five seasons, is looking to rebound from a season in which injuries affected his production. If he does so, then Peat's versatility likely will earn his snaps at right guard, the position vacated this offseason by the release of Jahri Evans.
He may be a first round starter, after all, he was just really fat and out of shape.

Put him at guard for a year, develop Turner for a year. This is likely Streifs last season as a saint. 2017 will see Turner and Peat on the right side.

So now his height and his weight are more appropriate for the tackle position.

I hate him at G. If he's earned it just put the man at RT and let him get comfortable.

The more I read and think about it this is all for Peat's motivation.
Get with the program or your arse will be forever stuck at guard(I'm guessing thats not where he wants to be).
The Saints took him to be a great RT and a solid LT if need be.

Time to move Streif out and see what Peat can do at RT

I remember watching him at The Greenbrier last season early on in training camp. At the end of practice during the 50 yard wind sprints or whatever he finished last by like 10+ yards, every... single... time. My 6 year old daughter could have probably beat him in a foot race. Glad to hear he's picking up the conditioning a bit.

Rather the more athletic of the two, Streif and Peat, to take RT and the other at RG.

I was hoping they would have let Strief walk after last season. Regardless, if he pans out they will be set at LT and RT for the next decade.

I really don't understand putting him at G. I like the versatility but you're stunting the growth of a young player. Let him play RT where he'd definitely be more effective. He wasn't that great at G last year and I'd expect the same here. You're juggling too much around for this dude. He can't be worse than Strief last year and I thought he played well when he was in at T. Not helping this guy at all. By the time he starts RT he will basically be a rookie getting a full year start there.

Actually young guys starting at guard and then sliding to tackle is quite normal in the college and pro games. Pass blocking at the tackle position on a higher level isn't always an easy transition. Some guys do it for a few games, some up to a year. Some coaches just want the best starting 5 talent wise on the field. Allowing Peat to learn the speed of the game is a good trade off and going against powerful DTs weekly can teach him how to keep his own base low enough to maximize his own strength.

Payton can figure out how he best fits/works this year. I do not think our viewing of him in spot duty at three different positions is sufficient input to judge. I like the line Payton is using that the best five O linemen will start. Who and where to be seen. Let the competition heat up.
