Does he get the starting job, or with the injury, does he still need to prove himself? Also, what is our weakest position of our o-line?

He will get the starting position because they pretty much have to.

This. And man he has to hit and play well (and stay healthy) through his rookie contract.

Hurst is a competent LT, so if he’s not ready that’s fine. Mini and training camp will be big for him.

If/when we’re eliminated from the playoffs, hopefully he takes 100% of the LT snaps. He needs reps.

So far this year, he’s looked slow. He will have to compete for the starting job IMO and will have to step up his game and stay healthy.

Surely at worst, he'll be a road grading guard

We have an out in Peat’s deal this off-season that I can’t imagine Loomis not taking to get rid of that huge labia and his albatross of a contract. Kick Hurst inside to LG which is his natural position and where he plays very well at and give Penning the keys to start at LT. You have to start cutting costs anywhere possible and shooting Peat to the moon would be a start.

Left tackle is weakest link since the departure of Terron Armstead.

Watching him, I wonder if his position is more G than T.

He's a fricking mauler and didn't get pushed around much

Penning is very raw and not ready to start at LT

Nah, he has elite athletic traits. He’s a tackle, he just needs reps.

Penning will be playing guard next year after we draft a competent tackle in rd 2

Why is that?

Because you invested a 1st round pick in him and you’re almost surely releasing Peat to help get under the cap but you have Hurst who is a LG not a LT on a very team friendly deal that only costs you $3.7 mil against the cap so he’s almost assuredly one of your starting OL. That leaves Penning to play LT. Hurst plays better inside and Penning has only ever been a tackle so why play them both out if their natural positions? If Penning falls on his face next year then you know you have to go draft a LT but that won’t be this draft. This isn’t a deep draft for OT and you have other major areas of need like QB, DT, DE, S, RB and WR. You have to get younger and cheaper on the DL and find another RB to pair with Kamara since you can’t get rid of him for another year or two and you have to find a cheap WR to replace Landry although I think Shaheed has assured himself of big snaps next year you still can’t count on Thomas playing at all. Olave and Shaheed alone won’t be enough.

That this is the hope indicates another bust. Same thing was said about Peat (moving to guard) his rookie year.
