article from The Ringer

quote:

New Orleans has never truly invested in a pass catcher in that span. In fact, it’s been among the cheapest spots on their roster for most of the last 13 years. Brees has become famous for spreading the ball around as much as any quarterback. Should New Orleans make Thomas—or anybody—the highest-paid receiver in the league when the Saints built the best passing offense in football for 13 years by putting their money everywhere else?

Saints had drew Brees for every one of those seasons. Signing him is a move to protect the future without Drew at this point

IMO the WR position is that last one that you sure up when putting together a championship squad. For that reason I would hate to be paying MT a ton of money when we have no QB but at the same time he could be incredibly valuable when we have a promising QB coming up

The market dictates what he is worth. He’s worth about $20M per season. Not Suntiger’s valuation, that’s the markets. He’s a vital cog to the Saints. Gotta sign him. Just accept it.

No team wants to put that much money on a WR.

There is no case against. He is a top 5 WR in the NFL currently, and most of the other top 5 are head cases (looking at you Antonio Brown and OBJ). You pay the man his money that he has earned over the last few seasons. The cap is rising, and WR contracts will keep getting bigger.

The ususal case against paying a wr this kind of contract is if there is no qb/roster built around the team. That's not the case with NO. We're stacked everywhere. Deep at QB and have a lot of youthful talent with a strong OL.

I guess it does average out including his previous years. But 20 mil, damn.

This is exactly my thinking. I believe if Drew still had 5+ years to play then Thomas would not be resigned. With a new QB on the horizon, they want this star WR in place to help whoever it may be.

So much this. Whoever we have next at QB is undoubtedly going to be in a much better situation having MT catching passes - he's the kind of receiver that would give a rookie QB a much better cushion to get adjusted to the league, and a fantastic target for someone like Teddy.

Don't mistake my explanation as support though. I don't believe paying a WR 22M/yr is a wise investment necessarily, but I do believe this is their thinking in working on doing just that.

History shows that dedicating this much of a percentage of salary to the WR position does not translate to championships. I think I am officially on the fence with this, so I won't be upset however this plays out. I see both sides of the argument.

I might feel differently if we had a ton of holes to fill, but we don't. We had to release a lot of players last year who wound up getting snapped up by other teams and I expect that will happen again this season.

he definitely deserves to be one of the highest paid WR's in the league, but I just don't think it benefits the Saints to tie up $22 mill of salary cap space on one WR, even if it is Thomas. Could you see the Patriots doing something like that. No way.

Sometimes the smart decision is just to cut ties, even with one of your most talented players, for the greater good of overall team goals

Of course there is. Don’t make naive or asanine blanket statements.

How often does paying wide receivers big time money translate to championships? The Saints have to decide whether or not it’s worth it to tie up that much money in one area of the team and cause the other areas to suffer. Can we afford to give Alvin Kamara or any other star this kind of money in a couple of years?

Usually, the only players worth major contracts like this are franchise quarterbacks. Every other position is much more disposable.

MT is worth every penny of $22 mill, just don't think it would be prudent for the Saints to tie up that kind of money on one player other than at QB. Hate to see him go though. Tough call to make, but great teams (the Patriots) make those kind of calls when they have to be made.

The Patriots make that kind of call about 30 year old players they think are about to start declining. MT13 hasn’t even entered his prime. It would be one of the dumbest mistakes this franchise has ever made to let him walk over $1-2m.
