This isn’t a bash type of thread. Some legitimate questions about the trade

You give up a 3rd pick for Bridgewater.
He has 1 year left on his deal and no guarantee to sign back with us.

Did we make the trade to just secure a top back up QB this year just in case Brees went down a game or two?

If he was traded to be the future then what guarantee do you think he has to re sign to be the back up next year assuming Brees will be back. Why would he stay if he can start somewhere else?

This leads me to the next question. If he is the future does anyone think that Brees may have told management that this was his last year? Therefore locking Teddy in next year as the starter?

Finally if Brees comes back and Bridgewater doesn’t re sign with us then does this trade end up being a huge waste of a draft pick?

In the NFL there this thing called compensatory PICK, for teams that lose players to bigger deals in FA...You receive a sort of like a rebate check except intead of food stamps it’s extra draft PICK

With Teddy da bridge set to earn a 15M+ contract from a QB desperate team this off season, we’re looking at a 3rd or 4th rounder unless we go on a spending spree

IN short:

LOOMISING

Philly made it obvious that good teams with depth and talent everywhere could realistically just need a competent qb to be competitive enough to win

They thought we were that team. If I asked you who would win you a playoff game: teddy Bridgewater or Tom savage, who'd you go with?

I was wondering about this, but the compensatory draft picks process is kept secret by the NFL. We should get something for him, but I think it also depends on who we sign in the offseason and who else we lose to free agency.

Also, do you know if the pick would be in the upcoming draft or for 2020? I thought it would be for the later draft.

Y'all really need to prepare yourself for when Brees retires in a few weeks. After reading 90% of all of you guys posts, we might be missing a majority of you come next season.

Only parts of the comp pick system are secret. The main part is very upfront.

If you lose more UFAs than you sign, you are eligible for one potential comp pick per player you lost. This does not include players that are cut (players you cut nor players you sign that were cut) or traded.

So if we lose Teddy and say 3 other eligible players but we sign 4 eligible players, we get squat.

After the raw number of players are factored, then there is a pairing process based on closest contract.

For instance if we lose Teddy (and 3 other players) and he signs for $15 mil per, and we only sign 3 players and none are close to that, he'd be the player we are getting comped for. Then they'd also take into account his playing time and any awards he may have next year.

There are also a finite amount of comp picks (32), and no team can have more than 4.

Picks are based on the prior year of FA. So if we get a comp pick for him, it'd be in 2020.

The exact formula is hard to pin down but overthecap has come extremely close to correctly predicting the picks every year.

I've been trying to put myself in Teddy's shoes as of late. I can go either way. IMHO I think he stays on the basis Drew tells him one more year and he is done. With that being said who knows. Does Teddy want money now or does he want a chance to be great? We can't look at today and bash the man he had essentially a 3rd string OLINE and I just don't think we cared that much today. But who knows I don't blame him either way. I think the better decisions take less money tomorrow for a chance to be great. He seems happy here.

They had an article how the saints probably won't get a pick if teddy leaves because we're so active in free agency. And it would also be in the 2020 draft if it happened not 19

I believe that in the fabric of time, you change nothing about the decisions that have lead the Saints to this point in time.

Besides, I like the Bridgwater Lockerroom Dances.

Thug, you seem to be the only one that understands compensatory picks. You answered me when I asked the same question yesterday on another thread.

yes it is highly unlikely that the saints would get a comp pick if bridgewater leaves and there is no way that a possible comp pick should be considered in the math concerning that trade. It was an odd trade to make when they made it and it’s an odd trade now

I’m trying to understand the best case scenario this offseason...TB re-signs? Drew plays another year or two? what then?

most likely is that the 3rd is burnt for some locker room dancing and a viable plan B if drew goes down this playoff run

If Brees were to go down in the season, I think Teddy could have led us to the playoffs, maybe not the #1 seed but the playoffs. We still win the division with Teddy at QB. I for one will give away a late 3rd round pick for that type of insurance policy 10/10 times.

That about sums it up. If we don't re-sign him he will have been an expensive insurance policy.

I wouldn't say it's highly unlikely. Bridgewater is going to get big money in free agency, more than we even have in cap space at the moment probably. We don't have any massive holes so it wouldn't surprise me if the team doesn't actually buy any big money FAs this offseason.

I agree with this in the moment. I highly doubt they traded for him with the thought that they could get a comp pick in the future. However I think it could play into what they decide to do in FA.

They would have already extended him if that was the case.

If Brees had gone down for a few games and Teddy helped get us to where we are would we be asking these questions?

It may actually be about what and what. We are (or were before Josh Hill but will still be close) around $15 mil under and I think that may be the top end of what Teddy gets.

You never know though, and some QB desperate team could love his potential as a starter enough to give him around $20 mil or more. I just don't see his market being that hot.

expectations from saints camp is brees retires this year if they win the SB

this was the insurance policy in case brees gets hurt, with the outside chance that teddy could be depended on to stay competitive during the rebuild if we had to draft and train a rookie QB to take over
