If the rule was set in place, it would take all of 3 seconds to know what the clock should be at.

If you have an untimed down, when does the clock start?

Yup but it was damn funny to watch it

Yeah I saw one happen live and knew we wouldn't get the TD. Then I saw the replay and realized how hilarious it actually was.

Looked like a hug your neighbor event.

No it doesn't. Only the playclock is reset in that fashion. They go under the hood to do the gameclock (unless this changed with the upstairs ref?).

And the clock would restart on normal rules (any run or catch that stays inbounds, a sacks, or a fumble recovered by the offense).

It isn't complicated and is even more of a decentive for the defense not to do it.

But what if the offense is trying to run the clock down, but the defense is committing penalties just to keep stopping the clock? An un-timed down is great for the defense in that case.

If you're caught doing it, lose a first round pick. End of discussion.

The offense can decline the untimed down. Easy.

I believe the defense can decline the 10 second run off rule in the same way.

i think either of our suggestions would stop the defenses from doing it. being rewarded for committing penalties shouldnt happen

...and the clock would start again at the set of the ball...yea that could work.

Totally agree. I just also don't want to add game stoppages (which I should have said as opposed to stoppages being interpreted as clock stoppages) to prevent that.

In our case yesterday, one untimed down with 4 secs left. Run your play, play clock starts, game clock does not, until ball is snapped.

Kinda like a play out of bounds.

Giants won the 2012 Super Bowl like this

They just sent out 12 defenders every play while the Pats were trying to get down the field to win the game. They gained an extra defender every play, which limited the other teams ability to get down the field, and all they gave up was 5 years however the play clock continued to roll through all this

They had 12 on the field for 1 play. Possibly on accident. They didnt send 12 out every play.

Not really, in those cases the defense wants the clock to stop because they need the ball back. If they use this tactic the offense would get the 5 yards and an automatic 1st down.

Article 3: Palpably Unfair Act. A player or substitute shall not interfere with play by any act which is palpably unfair.

Penalty: For a palpably unfair act: Offender may be disqualified. The Referee, after consulting his crew, enforces any such distance penalty as they consider equitable and irrespective of any other specified code penalty. The Referee may award a score. See 15-1-6.

The play clock runs but the game clock does not. It's an untimed down so the game clock doesn't run at all until after the play following normal rules.

So one play with no time running and another play with the 4 seconds left.

While I was watching the 12 o clock games, there was a similar scenario and I was like "why don't the DBs just tackle everybody?" and then of course it happens.

It could be ruled like the flagrant foul in basketball.

15 yard penalty and return previous time to the clock.

It will be banned after this year, especially if enough teams make it a league wide trend.

There is no reason why you should benefit from penalties. A penalty is a penalty and they're clearly supposed to penalize you and cost you yards/points and now it should be time as well.

6 seconds should've been added on the clock after that stunt.

I'm down with this, at the least it's clearly unsportsmanlike conduct, above and beyond any spur-of-the-moment act of a single player on the field. If you do something like this in a clearly coordinated manner from the coaches, maybe toss him from the game like in baseball.

THAT would stop it, I bet.
