In 2007, they were 17th in total defense and 16th in scoring. They went on a tremendous run in the playoffs and that banked him as a star candidate on the rise, which helped overcome the fact that they were average during the regular season.

In 2008, they were 5th in total d and 5th in scoring. But their offense played poorly and kept them from doing anything in the playoffs.

If we get anywhere in the middle of those two we are definite superbowl contenders if we don't turn it over a handful of times.

If we don't turn the ball over, we are superbowl contenders with saint's talk members playing d honestly.

Tez Wilson too dude.

He plays LB in the 4-3 though, no?

I meant pass rush with your front 4 so you didn't rely heavily on the blitz.

Of course, if you switch to a 3-4 (which seems like it could suit your personnel), that would alleviate that.

Well one of our past seasons we were top 6 in both offense and defense and amounted to nothing post season. Turnovers are huge after all.

Still seems like the offense should shoulder a lot of the blame for the Niners game though. Can't turn it over that much.

Yeah I agree with you. But our defense gave up a ton of yards this year and our pass rush was pathetic. We were -3 in turnover differential but were still able to win 14 games. Obviously, we were in the negative because the defense didn't get the turnovers. The fact that we only lost by four points while turning it over five times in the playoffs is baffling. Now I guess I see how the Vikings must have felt after the NFC Title game a few years ago. I still feel like that fumble that we failed recover on the 49ers first drive was a huge missed opportunity.

/rant

I think we got the best guy available for the job in Spagnoulo so I'm satisfied with that.

Really? So when players play well, the coach doesn't get credit and the players were just carrying his scheme. When they play poorly, it's all the scheme. Very convenient

There's a big difference when comparing first, second & third year players to season veterans. You can't expect younger players with less experience to see & react the same way players that have been there, done that & seen it all, would. You are underestimating the effect of having knowledgeable veterans like Vilma & Sharper & that they were basically onfield coaches as well.

I also disagree that that blitzing is "outdated". Jets D is a prime example of this. If you have guys that can cover on islands on the back end as well as playmakers to take advantage of bad decisions made on less time than needed(sharper, reed, revis etc.)We don't have these guys. A blitz heavy defense can still work and does in the nfl

Did you really pay attention to the Jets defense the past two seasons? They have had similar issues with their defense even with having a shutdown corner like Darrelle Revis. The Jets defense has struggled giving up the big play because just like the Saints, all that blitzing leaves a secondary exposed. When you constantly blitz at the high percentages as the Jets & Saints did, you are running the risk of giving up more & more big plays.

I don't have anything against blitzing. Matter of fact, it's a vital tool on the defensive side of the ball. It's just more effective when used in lower percentages then what Williams used. Too much film on blitz packages allows opponents to gameplan accordingly when it comes down to protection schemes & hot routes which in today's pass heavy game is recipe for disaster.

Once again, see above for old and outdated part. Secondly, I have no problem whatsoever with you being a critic. GW deserved to have critics this year. They stunk, but to say GW is a joke of a dc just comes off as pretty ignorant.

One of the main task of a defensive coordinator when comes to gameplanning is to scheme to take away the opposing offense's best player. Gregg made a habit of overlooking this fact more then he addressed it which goes further back then just this season.

If you go back to several games in '10 like San Francisco, Baltimore & Seattle(both games), there were negative indicators that rolled into this season. Like I said before, good coaches don't consistently place their players in situations that play to their weaknesses. The game last Saturday was just a small example of just that.

Both Jenkins & Harper showed they could not cover Vernon Davis man to man throughout the game Saturday yet Williams chose to cover Davis with Jenkins man to man with game on the line. How smart was that to cover a 6'3 250+ lbs TE who runs a 4.38 40 with a safety who is 6'0 204 & runs a 40 in the range of 4.55-4.59? There was no way Jenkins was going to jam Davis at the line, which he failed in doing so & there was no way he was going to stay step for step with Davis either.

Was that mismatch really necessary just to blitz Alex Smith? Not only was Jenkins mismatched on Davis but Roman Harper had to come up & make an open field tackle on an athletic receiver in space. That's something Harper has showed time & time again he is incapable of doing. Williams should have stuck with Abdul-Quddus who was actually in on the first two check downs to Frank Gore.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results .

Maybe I was wrong for calling Williams a joke. I think insane is a better description.
