Where should we start? Do we trade Grant and start with a speed rusher off the edge. We just got Ellis is round 1 of 08 draft, but the pocket rarely collapses in the middle. Do we go after a space eating DT? The defensive backfield's talent woes and depth seem to be rectified. We are once again vulnerable to the inside run. Scott Shanle is serviceable at best. Fujita is just a bit better, but not a difference maker. Seriously, what needs to be done for "true" improvement to take place.

You hit all the high notes. Upgrade Grant, DT and OLB.

Ellis is a legit DT who can be a force at times
Smith is a top 5 DE
Vilma is a top flight MLB
Greer and Porter were looking like the best corner duo in the NFL before thier injuries

basically we have elite talent at all three levels of the defense, we just need to build on that.

It also seems that quite often at first contact, our defensive players are moving backwards another two to three yards. When other defenses hit our RB's they stop in their tracks.

I dont know what the draft looks like but we desperately need a good outside lb that can rush the passer.

Arguable. Plenty of room for improvement in his game.

Smith is a top 5 DE
This year

Vilma is a top flight MLB
He's the best the Saints have had in a long time

Yep

I wouldn't go that far.

Well we just screwed ourselves by winning our first 13 ball games. So much for drafting high. Lol!!!! But seriously, those are good points we need to deal with, but not right now. Got a Super Bowl to win.

ellis' main issue is staying on the field

smith has looked like a top DE in three seperate years to me,'05, '06, and '09. the common thread? he was slim and in shape. seems like he was beefed up in '07 and he had the hernia in '08.

Top 5? Really?

How is he better than these guys?

Jared Allen
Dwight Freeney
Julius Peppers
Mario Williams
Justin Tuck

I also wouldnt have him ahead of:
Trent Cole
Richard Seymour
Osi Umenyiora

he is having a great year but lets not tout him top 5 just yet.

statistically he's better than all of those players w/ the exception of Allen who he's pretty much even with.

smith
41 tackles
12 sacks
3 FF
1 INt

those are top 5 numbers, he's always had this potential and had a similiar season in '06.

If he plays the same next year or even close he would push himself into the top category of DE but one good year doesnt put him in top 5 or even top 10 in my opinion.

Charles Grant however is pathetic this year.

he's had two pro-bowl quality years in the past four seasons. and in one of those he had a hernia. it's not like this is his breakout year.

Ellis rarely gets a push up the middle and almost never demands a double team in addition to spending a lot of time with the trainers.

He had a good season in '06 but so did most everyone else under the new regime. If he had a hernia in '08 and it caused him to suck as bad as he did then he should've elected for surgery. I'm not gonna accept that he was fat in '07. Everybody that sucks has an excuse. It doesn't detract from the fact that they suck. That being said, he's having a great season in '09 and I hope '07 and '08 are the anomollies.

I'm so tired of hearing this shite. We do not run a 3-4 defense. Pass rushing is the least used skill set in Greg Williams' Defense. The few times we run a 3-4 does not warrant getting rid of our talented OLB. now do we need depth there? sure, but we may have it in Casillas, Dunbar, or Arnoux, we will just have to see

What we need to do is cut the fat arse on the other side of the line that just shows up to collect his pay check to feed his chilren.

Seriously since Grant signed his fat contract what has he done?

did you watch the NE game? we were able to effectively pressure brady b/c he couldn't step up for most of the night. ellis is also our best run stuffer and the run defense stats after he is gone prove his worth.

he also had very good years in '04 and '05 but didn't start full time as howard was still on the roster. '07 was his only true bad year. he DID have a hernia in '08.

He looks like he just doesn't care as of late. For the first 4 games though he played inspired it seemed. Hargrove and Ayodele have seemed to play like this at times but certainly not for entire games
