The Saints must upgrade its front seven on defense, without question. The only "keepers", in my opinion, are Will Smith, Sed Ellis and Vilma. So, through free agency and the draft, the Saints must find a DE, DT and OLB, although a pair of OLBers would be ideal. Maybe this year's draft pick, Stanley Arnoux, will prove to be a player at OLB, but only time will tell as he is coming off a pretty serious injury.

With their first and second round picks, the Saints need to draft the best DE, DT or OLB on the board at that time. Use the later round picks to find an OT and depth in the secondary.

did you watch the NE game? we were able to effectively pressure brady b/c he couldn't step up for most of the night. ellis is also our best run stuffer and the run defense stats after he is gone prove his worth.
I must be watching a completely different Ellis than you.

he DID have a hernia in '08.
Then he SHOULD'VE had surgery. It's one thing to play through injury and be effective. It's another to play through injury and suck.

he played through the pain and had the surgery after the season, that is pretty admirable.

we also didn't have any options besides him, Grant was on IR mid way through the year and McCray was starting in place of him.

who would have replaced him? jeff charleston? despite his lack of a pass rush, he still finished with a career high in tackles so it is not like he was completely useless out there.

Seriously since Grant signed his fat contract what has he done?

You mean before Grant signed his contract what had he done. Had a thread on Grant many months back and statistically he sucked. He had had maybe one decent year out of his career full of mediocrity. There is no way he would have commanded as much on the market as we gave him, the front office thought it was a SuperBowl caliber year and panicked to make sure we didn't have hole at DE.

The difference between Grant and Bushrod is Bushrod is cheap adequacy while Grant is cap crippling adequacy.

Last month, Grant visited with Tampa Bay officials for two days, but the Bucs never made a contract offer. The Bucs later suggested that the visit was aimed at getting to know Grant a little better in the event he was eligible for unrestricted free agency next spring.

Almost, that sure would have been sweet. I'm sure Grant's agent appreciated the visit to a division rival too.

Define great. He did have two good 10 sack seasons, but these are his numbers the 2 years before we resigned him

quote:

2006 New Orleans Saints 16 16 64 49 15 6.0 -- 6 -- -- 0.0 -- -- 3
2005 New Orleans Saints 16 14 62 44 18 2.5 -- 2 -- -- 0.0 -- -- 1

LINK

Those number look depressingly similar to the mediocrity we've seen since.

quote:

2009 New Orleans Saints 14 14 35 26 9 4.5 -- 1 -- -- 0.0 -- -- 0
2008 New Orleans Saints 8 8 33 27 6 3.0 1 2 -- -- 0.0 -- -- 0
2007 New Orleans Saints 14 14 48 39 9 2.5 -- 2 -- -- 0.0 -- -- 0

I agree with most of this, as long as "keepers" you mean as starters.

I think our single biggest need is at DT. Ayodele is a decent backup at best who ended up beating out Clancy because Clancy is just too old. Ayodele and Pressley are young, though, so they may improve and develop.

At LB, I actually think that Fujita and Shanle are decent starters, but they are getting older and our backups are among the league's worst. Dunbar is halfway decent, but I really don't want to see Evans or Mitchell on the field again. We must upgrade the position. Hopefully, Arnoux can develop into a starter, but we still desperately need another quality LB.

In the secondary, Gay seems to get slower each game. He's no longer a quality nickelback. Jenkins' future is at safety, and I think the staff will move him in the offseason (and I think he has great potential there). So we need another top quality CB.

If past form holds, the front office will try to address these needs in free agency so that we can then draft the best players regardless of position.

As a SDE his main job is to get enough push on his side to disrupt running plays seeing as all teams in the nfl run to the right way more than they do to the left. With teams running right at him he needed to not disappear in games like he has and until he started getting banged up, he would play at a high level. His pass rushing skills are what made him so impressive because not only does he have the strength and size to play the run, but on passing plays he has/had the abilities to rush the passer.
