I was a fan of the old, always have been, but I understand completely if he’s upgrading in helmets for protection.

His old helmet did not meet the new NFL standards and was going to be prohibited, so Brees made the switch before now.

Yes, but pictures from training camp don't show anything different.......I think. At least not that I can tell.

After this upcoming season, the Patriots quarterback's typical, traditional Riddell VSR-4 helmet will be banned from the league. This all comes after a league decided to mandate what type of helmet players can wear. Between the 2016 and 2017 season, concussions saw an increase which led the league and the NFL Player's Association to make the change.
While speaking at the Milken Institute Global Conference, Brady did seem sad to see his helmet eventually move to the wayside, but understands the move.
"It's a good thing. They're trying to find helmets the players will wear that will absorb force better. I think that's a positive," Brady said at the conference on Monday, via Mike Reiss of ESPN. "I still wear a very old helmet, probably out of habit. You talk about behavioral changes are hard; I've tried new helmets and I'm like, 'Doesn't work, get that out of here!' You just have to get comfortable with it."
He added: "The reality is that the people who make the rules, they're trying to make the game a bit safer. It's still a violent game. It's going to be. You have the best athletes in the world at the fastest speeds, and who weigh the most. It's a lot of force."
