Wilkerson aside since he was cut and can be signed at anytime, we can't sign any big FAs until FA starts, and if FA starts and Brees isn't signed we lose another $12 mil in cap.
So it'd be EXTREMELY counterintuitive for that to be the case. Him hitting FA cripples our ability to sign big FAs.

More than likely it is a smokescreen as usual.
Payton and Management are working on free agents and the cap then will get Drew locked in after the FA pieces are in place.

Just had literally all season and offseason to sign him to an extension. He said it was a done deal. Loomis said it was a done deal.
And yet the eve of free agency...and it's not a done deal.
But it'll happen any second now. Or we already agreed and we are just waiting to sign other free agents before we sign him. Or whatever silly reason some of you want to make up to ease your minds.
I want him to finish his career here. I want them to get a deal done. Everyone said it was going to be a sure thing. And yet, here we are.

I think folks have every right to be nervous. Someone comes in swinging 30/year around for Drew's likely last NFL contract I don't really blame him for wanting to cash in one last time.
I'd like to think we'll work something out and I'm sure he wants to be here. But when the cards are on the table and real $$ starts getting talked about you have to do what's best for you and your family.

You obviously don't understand the dynamics of allowing Drew's contract to void come Wednesday. It's also obvious that there numerous other posters who don't either despite the ramifications being posted & mentioned repeatedly. See bonethug's post above. He gets it.
