You may value DE more than guard but to compare the two at their respective positions isn't a comparison. If I named the best DE/OLBs (let's call it pass rusher) it would be a little while before I got to Mario. If I name the best offensive lineman in the league, Nicks would come up very, very quickly.
imo, he's better than evans

I'll give the niners props: their pass rush is nasty. They just beat the crap out of you.
I think it helps their pass rush that their second level is absolutely stellar as well. It's a give and take type thing. The quick dumps aren't as effective so it is alot harder to negate the pass rush.
The dlineman can literally just pin their ears back and go when you have lb's that will fill every hole like insulation foam.

I think I agree. I def agree at the point of attack. Where Jahri is better though is out in space on the screens and our screen game is vital. Best in the league which, btw, wasn't mentioned enough, imo, after the SF game. Once Pierre got concussed (or knocked the frick out whichever you prefer), we didn't have a screen game to help control their pass rush. Hurt us until we wore them down in the fourth.
The thing that kills me about that game still is that all we had to do was hold them to a fg on the last drive. Their def was never stopping us again. They were wore out and that's what bothers me the most. GW didn't realize that and wanted to end it right there. Sometimes, even as a DC, you have to understand the flow of the game. Payton understands it, Miles doesn't and apparently either does GW.

No doubt Nicks over Williams.
Build the defense through the draft. Let the offense age together...

Agreed. Nicks is way more valuable than Williams
Is Nicks better at his position than Williams is at his? No question. What many of you fail to realize is the value of the position itself. Guard is one of the least valued positions on the team (it's valued slightly above K, P and C... of course jest... slightly). DE is one of the most valued positions. The two just can not be compared. If you want to debate the merits of Williams the DE and if he is any good or not, that is a valid topic. However, if you acknowledge that Williams is one of the best DE's in the league (again, very debatable), then you are silly to say Nicks would be more valuable than Williams.

sign Nicks. Williams is overrated. He was considered the second best DE on the Texans by many experts.

The premise of the thread is utterly ridiculous.
Jahri Evans got a $56 million 7 year deal with $26 million guaranteed first 3 years.
By comparison Julius Peppers received $90 million 6 years with $42 million guaranteed in the first 3 years.
The idea that it would come down to Nicks a Guard or Williams a DE is implausible.

If nicks v williams, I'll take williams. I have confidence in mickey to find the next nicks at a bargain. For both, can't take williams. Williams really is a special talent and spags would flip out if we had him on the edge. It would be fun to watch.

That wasn't the original premise of the thread. it was Nicks/Colston vs. Williams- which is ballpark close.
It morphed into other possible scenarios.

To the OP the question you want ask yourself is what do you value the most?
Do you want a part-time expensive player to rush to rush the passer? (look at injury history)
Or do value an elite possibly the best in the league protecting your future hall of fame QB?
To me it is a no brainer. Yeah I would love to have someone that can rush the the passer. But I would prefer to have someone that keeps Drew healthy.

If the Saints really wanted Williams they need to release Vilma & Smith then lose Colston. That way they could Tag Nicks
