80 receptions is not a "small percentage", especially given that he missed 3 games (2 officially but a third since it was his first back and was sparingly used). That's an average of 6.15 catches/game, which translates to 98 over a full season. Again, not a "small percentage" at all.

I agree that DE > G/WR but it seems we have a little more depth at DE than tackle.

Maybe Im just looking thru homer glasses.

Quality trumps quantity IMNSHO (in my not so humble opinion). Plus guard is one of the easiest positions to fill, while quality DE's are extremely difficult to find. The position is too valuable to ever overlook for a guard, center, RB, WR, MLB, OLB, RT, S.

CB, QB, LT, DT are probably the only positions that are equal or more valuable than DE

If nothing else that thread gave us all some hilarious "meme" material.

We need to keep Nicks. It's been said over and over...Brees works best with a clean pocket and minimal "up front" pressure. Nicks/Evans provide that for him.

Colston is #3 priority, but not by much. He was on fire once he came back. Made some big time clutch plays.I would really hate to see him go.

I just don't know as good as Williams is I'm just nervous about replacing the big three in the O-line. As has been stated before with Drews height and his comfort in stepping up it would be a gamble with no known quality replacment on our roster.

We saw what happens with others on the o-line @ St Louis. Six sacks and a loss.

Nicks is, in my opinion, an almost invaluable part of our offense. Our O-line is a big reason Drew is so good and to lose our best O-lineman would be a huge blow. I love Colston, the guy can ball and hes an amazing receiver, but unfortunately its easier to replace a WR, especially with Drew throwin the ball. Hes had some injuries, but the guys tough. Plus we could prob get something good for him, so tough loss it would be. But better than loosing Nicks. As for Williams, i really think we have the talent on D to be good. Jordan will be a year older and Tez will have an offseason. Our safteys are fine and our corners are improving. Plus at LB, Dunbar is stepping up and showing signs of greatness. Our defense is smelling greatness. I dont think we should consider trading a key element of our offense for a d-lineman.

As for Chad:

They might resign him, but its doubtful they franchise him, cap figure is too high if they do that

quote:

The Texans aren’t likely to franchise him because he would cost them $22.9 million. He made $18 million this season.

The Texans can’t afford to carry Williams at $22.9 million for one year.

Was gonna put the same thing but I trump since I win my leagues 82% of the time.

*I would do the Colston/Nicks for Mario with a kicker. Cut Will Smith and add another $3-4mil back in cap savings and use that $ to supplement the Colston/Nicks loss

My preferred option would be to keep Nicks and try to make it work...
-minus Smith adds $3-4mil
-no Colston would be about $7mil
$11mil is in the range of top pass rusher contracts. Do Nicks contract similar to Evans with a lower first year number...
$12 million signing bonus. 2011-2012: $3 million, 2013: $7.2 million, 2014-2015: $6.8 million (+ $500,000 roster bonuses), 2016: $8 million (+ $500,000 roster bonus)
...then next year trade Evans or Nicks for a 1st Rder when the cap hit will be minimal.

#59 draft pick big posession type receivers then-
Juron Criner AZ
Reuben Randle LSU
Marvin McNutt IA
Brian Quick AppSt
-or just go with Arrington Joe Morgan added to the crew

I love n appreciate Colston. Fact is tho he'll turn 29, has had wrist and collarbone surgeries plus 5 known knee surgeries including microfracture. It would be a big loss but it's all about the sum total of what performance you get at what price.

nice find. if he does somehow hit free agency, I don't think we would persue him anyway. the smart thing about this front office is that they don't go overpay for other teams' free agents. this is why the Steelers, Ravens and Patriots of the league are year in and out a top contender; they are smart with their money

As someone who has watched a ton of Mario, first off, he isn't that good. Always injured and doesn't affect games like you think he would or should. Sure his numbers come out okay, but you'll go games without noticing him and he'll get those numbers in bunches. Usually will get 3 in one game kind of thing. Very similiar to how Roman got his sacks in the Chicago game but is generally very underwhelming of a player. Same with Mario. It can be argued the Texans were better without him. Having said that, he was playing out of position. He wouldn't switch to the 3-4 DE which would be his ideal position and would dominate. He wanted sack numbers so they allowed him to "try out" at OLB. They'll prob tag him and try to trade him and if they can't, they'll try to resign him to a more friendly number. However, they probably won't be able to do that so my guess is he gets traded or released. They can't leave the franchise tag on him bc of the big cap number. Texans need to spend money on WR, Arian Foster, and depth.

I like the not go with the flashiest biggest name FAs also. It's all the harder to get the return on your investment.

I've thrown out in other threads... Robert Mathis- should be available, a few months younger than Will Smith and more of the edge speed desperately needed, prolly could be had for less than what the remainder of Smith's deal is.

Jason Jones is a younger guy at 25 that should be available. Went to DE a lot last year and wasn't as dominate. Dunno, but like him as a penetrating DT.

*there are quite a few legit sources saying HOU could possibly let Mario walk. Think about it- they were pretty damn good with him gone.

Osi Umenyiora is in his last year with the Gaints worth under 4 mil. He'd be a nice addition.
