If this was still DA’s defensive system, then Delane would be an amazing pick. However Brandon Staley runs a HEAVY Zone based cover 3 system. Which usually calls for bigger, rangy corners that can cover their mid/deep third. Not saying Delane can’t do that, but he’s not very big and much more valuable as a press/man corner.

having a shutdown corner on a rookie deal is the best option from a roster construction standpoint..
Downs has a lot of value in the fact that he can be very versatile, and would be the cheapest option down the road, if he pans out....
taking a WR that high means you are betting on him being a top 5 WR in a few years... we will already have to figure out if we are going to pay Shough, if he pans out, and having Tyson needing to be paid right after, well, ask the Bengals how much it hurts overall roster construction to have that much money dedicated to a QB-WR tandem, no matter how good they are

quote:This may be the dumbest thing posted in a while. A 1st round WR would be under team control for TWO years after Shough's rookie contract expires. And if he's good, Shough will get an extension a year before that. So that's THREE YEARS between their deals. Who know where Olave is 5 years from now. You always want a premier WR for your QB. Let smarter people worry about the timing.

You’d have him on a rookie deal for the next five years while Olave will be presumably making his highest salary.
It would actually be very smart and a good value taking a receiver at 8.
Not even true number two receivers are getting 15-20 a year in free agency.

I think a lot of our fan base is forgetting that giving Shough as many weapons as possible and focusing on his development is paramount.
I get wanting Downs or Delane but our WR is full of dogshit and unproven guys outside of Olave.

I like Vele but definitely not as a #2. He can block and has moments where he shows strong hands and awareness when catching the ball.
The Polk's and Bub Means of the world are on their last chance.
the Saints skill guys have gone on IR repeatedly the last few years and that's why I don't like the Tyson steam here lately. I mean anyone who has been paying attention until the end knows ain't none of these RB's or WR's been all that durable. That's why I think it's lunacy to take someone like Tyson. Thank college football and NIL and the shite transfer portal. There won't be any slam dunk draft classes due to the new way in CFB.

Peter Schrager Final Mock Draft
Looks like after all that he has us taking Downs at 8.

8. New Orleans Saints
Caleb Downs, S, Ohio State
New Orleans needs a receiver, but it also lost a lot of talent on defense this offseason. Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia said on "The Schrager Hour" that Downs can be the face of a franchise and could immediately become the smartest player for an NFL defense. He had six INTs over the past three seasons and makes plays against the run. Brandon Staley got the most out of Derwin James Jr. in Los Angeles, and he can do the same for Downs in New Orleans.

Schrager bases this on intel so he does get a decent amount of these right.
Downs is a really good player and the potential to lead your secondary for years. It’s not really what I want position wise but I get it.

They interviewed Downs on Good Morning Football this morning. Wouldn’t be upset with this pick at all. Seems like he really loves football, understands the sport and definitely has the mentality to be a leader. They talked about his quote, “There has to be consequences if a wide receiver chooses to go over the middle” and how important it was for an offense to fear a defense.
I didn’t realize Dré Bly was his uncle.

Once you get beyond picks 4 or 5 it's pretty hard to get many of these right. He correctly mocked the 1st four picks last year (though Hunter went to the Jags at 2 instead of the Browns at 2), but things fell off a bit after that.
While if you asked me yesterday I might have said Downs was the pick, the Saints over the last 4 drafts have generally been easy to mock in terms of position (not necessarily the player). They've taken a guy at a premium position of greatest need. You could argue the Saints still have a lot of positions of "need", WR, CB, DE/edge, but I wouldn't be surprised if they see WR as the greatest need.
IMO, if he's available, I think they take Jordan Tyson.
