Franchise tag incoming.

although, nicks seems like that guy that would sandbag the shite out of a franchise year.

prolly from his demeanor in that interview today. i sensed a little hostility in his voice today, but i wouldn't think he'd "sandbag" it. He'd need to keep up his play to maintain that #1 status for a big contract the following year. He'd be pissed, but I think he would still play his game.

I actually heard him address on 870 a few weeks ago. He said "I'm not too greedy but Jahri got x 2 years ago so I'd think the market would dictate I y now" or something to that affect

No idea why some of you are surprised. It's going to take a minimum of 9 million a year realistically probably about 10 if he hits open market. to get Nicks locked down and probably a floor of about 30 mill guaranteed. This isn't breaking news.

He'll be gone, unless they franchise him. Saints won't pay that much nor do they have the cap space

If they franchise him, they'll be paying him what he wants for one year only.

He wants to be able to have a contract in case something happens.

They can make it work with the cap, and will likely franchise him this year while renegotiating a deal.

Well that would be dumb, as it would only diminish what he can get in the following year.

Nicks has already told reporters that if he was franchised, he would still report to camp and continue playing as usual. FWIW

Is the franchise tag actually any cheaper? I may be remembering wrong but isn't the OLine position lumped together for the purpose of the tag so rather than the average top pay of guards he'd be getting the average top pay of well paid left tackles?

Well, there you go. So I wonder where others are getting this "he seems to be the type to sandbag it" stuff from...

are most of us on the same page when I say that 112-120 million wrapped up between 2 guards is a bit insane?

I wouldn't agree with you.

If it were two offensive tackles, would you say the same thing?

depends on how much of that sum was going towards the left tackle.

but yeah, 120 mil for 2 Olinemen is a lot.

We're looking at having about 16-18 per year.

That's the number you should be looking at, as the cap only counts per year, not the total of the contract.

not to the same degree, no. Tackles are way more valuable than guards. Top pass rushers in the league come from the DE and OLB positions, so the edge protection is infinitely more important than the middle

You aren't equating the valuability of ones offense and dynamic setups as regards to the value of X and only applying value of Y's.

Which is why all season long pressure up the middle was the way analysts said to stop Brees? The model team build is constantly changing in the NFL.
