Saints waive QB K.J. Costello, RB Devine Ozigbo ahead of roster cuts deadline

The New Orleans Saints have already begun the difficult process of trimming down their roster ahead of Tuesday’s NFL deadline, with teams required to downsize from 85 players to 80 by 4 p.m. ET. Per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill, the Saints released both quarterback K.J. Costello and running back Devine Ozigbo on Sunday after returning to New Orleans following a week in Green Bay. That brings the team down to 83 contracts.

So what do these roster moves mean? Costello was signed after starting quarterback Jameis Winston suffered a sprained foot late in training camp, which sidelined him for a few weeks. Only Andy Dalton and Ian Book saw any snaps in the Saints’ two preseason games, so Costello was brought in more to help keep drills running on schedule in practice. At this stage in the summer the team needs three arms to keep everything running smoothly. Now that he’s on the outs, this may signal that Winston is healthy and ready to return to practice fully with the team.

It’s more intriguing at running back, though. Ozigbo was competing with Dwayne Washington, Tony Jones Jr., and undrafted rookie Abram Smith for the opportunity to back up Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram II. We’re very much on the outside looking in, but it feels like Washington is in the lead for that third spot in the rotation, leaving just one more vacancy for either Jones or Smith to fill (though it’s likely someone ends up returning on the practice squad). They’ve got one more exhibition game in which to make their case for that last roster spot.

Before that, though, the Saints will practice in front of tens of thousands of fans at the Caesars Superdome on Sunday evening — possibly with Winston running the first-team offense again. It’s definitely something to watch out for, as are the three remaining roster cuts the Saints must make by Tuesday’s deadline.

Kinda trash they gave KJ no live game reps to put on film for the rest of the league. And this is coming from a guy who knows the last time he played at State, he wasn’t very good.

Ian Book did not deserve 7 quarters the last 2 games.

Just like the last 3rd QB who’s no longer in the league, Grayson… who was arguably better.. that is saying a lot

This should tell you all you need to know about Costello. KJ couldn't complete passes vs a college zone... I would hate to see him try vs a pro scheme

pretty much this... if you couldn't even look decent enough to take snaps away from Pamphlet in a preseason game, you REALLY don't have any business being on an NFL roster...

hope he studied hard at State

They could've gave Costello at least 1 quarter.

It couldn't have been no worse than Book.

Do you really want dalton and jameis playing the entire 3rd preseason game?

He wasn’t on the team to get any sort of look in preseason, like the article said his signing was to fill a QB role in practice with Winston sidelined

Book would also probably be 3rd string in the USFL right now if we weren’t protecting him on this roster. Give KJ some reps Instead of trotting out Book for 7 and a half quarters. He couldn’t have done much worse. We lost both games anyway lol. Maybe KJ improved? We knew 6 and a half Quarters ago that Book didn’t.

He could always put up a Nathan Peterman statline against practice squad players. It could definitely be worse

Don't know why we care so much about Book or Costello anyway. Hill would be the emergency 3rd stringer after Winston and Dalton so we're really worried about 4th string. If we get to that point we're boned either way.

Neither Costello or Book are making the team anyway so this doesn't matter

Ozigbo is pretty surprising, media seemed to think he was tight against Jones for the 3rd RB spot (though Jones seemed to run away with it in the GB game)

The more snaps he takes the less Winston & Dalton need to take. Unless he was out there lighting shite up, his future was the PS anyway. And that's where he will reside until he's no longer eligible, retires, or we find his replacement.

You obviously haven’t read any of my posts. I’ve acknowledged he was bad 2-3 times. It’s weird you ignored those parts of my posts. I’m a State Alum. I also realize all of that stuff is in the past and perhaps he improved a bit. He actually played pretty well at Stanford and he obviously had a record breaking game against LSU. So he does have good football in him occasionally.

Did you enjoy watching Book for 7 and a half quarters? Do you think that did anything positive for us or even him? The preseason is all about about letting a guy like KJ play a few series. David Blough has literally started NFL games for the Lions and his college career was far worse than Costello’s.

The Saints also released kicker John Parker Romo. Still need to get rid of 2 more players by Tuesday

No, I don't think anyone enjoys book including our staff; so if they thought Costello was even close to book, KJ woulda got a shot. There is no conspiracy to hold KJ down

You sound like the lsu guys here

why are you not seeing the benefit of us being able to learn about book during this preseason games. The outcome was bad but the process and learnings were needed and beneficial.
