Saints coach Sean Payton has said they’re “always” in the quarterback market, and that extends to a possible first-rounder in this year’s draft.

According to Herbie Teope of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Payton was in Lubbock yesterday to put Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes through a private workout.

At the moment, the Saints have two first-round picks (11th and 32nd) and a second (42), but have expressly stated the need to improve their defense.

But with 38-year-old quarterback Drew Brees entering the final year of his contract, it would be irresponsible to not have an eye to the future there, so Payton’s doing his homework.

Mahomes threw for 11,252 yards and 93 touchdowns in three seasons at Texas Tech, and while some view him as slightly below quarterbacks Mitchell Trubisky, DeShone Kizer, and Deshaun Watson, he could still be a first-rounder.

If we keep 32, I think the chances of us taking him there are pretty high. Everyone will melt down, but the truth is that with Brees being 38, the future is uncertain at the most important position in the sport. It would be the right move to grab a guy if they really felt like he could be the one post-Brees.

Must have missed the Twitter rant from a couple CSC guys yesterday, lol. Was pretty entertaining. Arguing about if it was a big deal both SP and Loomis flew out to hold the workout.

I really like it and I'm not against taking a QB, either mahomes or Watson, at 32.

We need a plan if we can't bring drew back, and I like to have our future already on the roster.

11: Thomas/barnett/taco
32: mahomes/Watson
42: Wilson/white/ moreau etc
3A: wr/Te
3b: lb/ol

I posted my beef about the Anthony valuation in a thread. Grayson was the same thing. Okay, pick the guy as an investment but he wasn't carrying a 3rd Rd grade by my memory.

Where would you feel comfortable with Mahomes? At 11 I would be upset. 31, okay, this is the guy they are betting on as a successor- commitment, but it better payoff. 42 I'd be perfectly happy with on a valuation basis. The kid has potential but he's still more developmental than NFL ready IMO.

Wouldn't use those first rounders. But this the Saints...

There's no way Mahomes reaches pick 42. It's just not going to happen. He may not even reach 32. I said yesterday don't be shocked, IF SP really loves this kid, if we trade up from 32 to take him. I think it's a huge deal that they both flew out there to hold that workout. They did it for Grayson and took him. People will melt if we take him anywhere in the 1st, but as mentioned previously, if SP loves him that much and is that confident he will and can be the successor, I'm all for it. I really liked Mahomes at TT, and also like the fact he has sports lineage throughout his family. I think he'd be a perfect fit for our offense, especially with a year (maybe two) watching and studying Brees.

I think we can all agree on 1 fact, we've made worse 1st round picks (and recently) than a possible Drew Brees successor.

I look at it also like we entered this offseason without that extra pick. We gave up an expendable piece for an extra pick. If they're that confident in Mahomes, why not use the extra pick you received for someone who could potentially be the future of your team; rather than just another role player on defense. Draft that 1 offensive player, and then focus on defense (like you would have if you had never received the 32nd pick) with the other picks.

It's great if Sean really likes him but I'd be worried drafting a college QB from a spread offense like that.

How many successful QBs have come out of the Air Raid offense?

Not sure Mahomes is worth anything higher than a 3rd. He is a high risk proposition.

No issue if he's there at 32.

Not sure on a number, but coming to a system in the NFL that routinely runs out of the shotgun on 1st and 2nd downs anyway; I don't see him having that big of an issue with a year or two to fine tune under Brees in this system.

I mean.. I hear you but Drew Brees was a QB from a spread offense out of Purdue.

but lately I'd agree, the QB's coming out haven't been anything special.

college coaches main focus is to find a QB who fits their system. They are way more concerned with that then trying to prepare them for the NFL.

the college game and the pro game are nothing like they use to be and that's one of the biggest reasons. In my opinion.

If there is any position where the 5th year option is way more important than other positions it's QB.

If we are going QB before the 3rd round I'd much rather use a first on one than 42. If you actually hit you are going to be kicking the frick out of yourself for not getting that extra year with a QB.

That said they have to really feel strong about that QB to take him. Whether that's Watson or Kizer at 11 or Mahomes at 32, they have to "know" he will be the guy.

Love it. Great guy and a good family. Kid is definitely not a flake.

Dude has a really high ceiling and I've said several months back I prefer him over Watson.

Yup, if you would pick the QB at 42, you pick him at 32 instead. The 5th year option is crucial if you're planning to go QB.

Plenty. Tim Couch had a pretty amazing NFL career. So did Case Keenum and Tommy Chang.

If you go for him at 32 you're basically giving up any chance of another championship with Brees.

We need starting defenders. Any defenders. Linebackers, pass rushers, corners.

If they decide this is a lost cause and they want to blow it up, then sure, if you think Mahomes is the next Brees, then take him, let him study under him for 2 years, stockpile high draft picks, and cut brees loose in a few years and start over.
