From NFL.com:

Overview
Tape shows a player who loves to get into routes and become a target, but also who shies away from the physical requirements asked of him in the run game. Mack's draft projection will likely be tied directly to how teams see him as a matchup tight end. While he has some straight-line speed, he isn't that dynamic as a route-runner and might not have much impact beyond first-level routes.

quote:

Strengths
Very comfortable working from the slot
Has athletic ability to become a much better move blocker if he's willing to get his nose dirty
Comes off the snap with very good early push into his routes
Carries good straight-line speed and should run well at the combine
Shows ability to track and make impressive body adjustments to haul it in
Good pluck-and-tuck ball skills when throws are wide of his frame
Has necessary hand quickness when throws are put on top of him out of breaks
Can absorb contact and finish the catch in traffic
Weaknesses
Has some hip tightness that limits sharpness of breaks and stride length
Upright into breaks and lacks suddenness to open to his quarterback on comebacks
Not much shake as an open-field runner after the catch
Lacks agility to elude defensive backs looking to chop his legs out from under him
Inconsistent avoiding forceful route redirection
Disappointing drop rate over final two collegiate seasons
Positioning and footwork as a blocker leave much to be desired
Fails to look for and find work as second-level blocker

Pre-Draft Analysis
Mack has slightly below-average weight, above-average length and above-average timed top-end speed. He moves around the formation, and he has the tools to develop into a matchup problem. He's fast enough to work the seam, and he's smooth transitioning upfield after the catch. He is a natural hands catcher, and he flashes the ability to make tough catches, yet his hands are inconsistent.

Probable PS stash. He has to beat out 2 of these guys to make the roster.

Jared Cook
Josh Hill
Dan Arnold
Garrett Griffin

Could end up being a good pick in long run. Who knows though...maybe he takes that #3 spot this year. Stranger things have happened.

Agreed... wasn’t Arnold a UFA? If so then this guy is... one round better?

It's not a terrible pick. I'm just glad they haven't reached for anyone this year (Rick Leonard). Every player so far has been a value pick.

Good size and decent athleticism. Fairly strong. Not the fastest but decent speed. Guessing he's a good blocker?

So maybe not a long term Cook replacement, but seems maybe a better version of Josh Hill.

If he's a reliable pass catcher as his scouting report says, he can sure as hell beat out Arnold. It'd then come down to blocker versus matchup TE for that spot.
