I think we’re seeing a trend that D-Coordinators around the league are using to defend the Saints offense. We saw it with the Falcons and Vikings last year. Dropping 7-8 in coverage, pressure with the front 4. If we can’t establish the run, it’s tough at 2nd/3rd and long. We don’t even try to throw deep. Yes Drew hit Cook on a double move, nice throw but most times he struggles to find anyone open. Check down to AK with a LBer waiting for him or a drag route across the middle to one of our WR’s. Then SP gets cute with Taysom trying to find something that works. I realize it’s early, no preseason and the Bucs defense is legit. We won with TO’s and ST, that’s the NFL but yesterday the offense looked eerily similar to the games we lost last year.

If Payton limits himself on all the sweep run play calls and the dink passes in the flat to covered running backs it will go a long way. Far too many times the Saints had negative yards/plays involving stretch runs and passes to the running backs. Hard to get a rhythm and keep drives going when you start off going backwards.

Getting pressure with 4 is a great way to stop any passing offense

Realistically they blitzed a lot.

We’ve won 78% of our games the past 3+ seasons and here you are cracking the code to beating the saints

A hell of a lot and they led the league last year in blitz plays.

Yeah those outside runs and dump offs 4 yards behind the line were driving me crazy watching the game, but I think part of it was TBs linebackers. White and David have a ton of speed and killed the Saints on the plays towards the sideline.

We've won 78% of games over the past 3 seasons because of our defense, not our offense.

Drew's record breaking completion %, Kamara's rookie year, Thomas best WR in league and a top 5 online may disagree.

While true, there is also truth to what he's saying when it comes to playoffs though. Bucs will end up have a middle of the pack overall D, with a bottom ranked passing D again this year like they have in the past. We'll fair well against those teams, but when we get to playoff caliber defenses we struggle

Our offense has regressed. The rest of world doesn’t use full backs and 3 tihhht ends. Yet we now do that more than ever lol

Our offense "sucked" and we still scored 27 points on offense. We have been spoiled by CSP and Brees, but our offense is still very good.

For comparison, only 8 teams scored 27 or more points and 4 others scored 27 (that is including possible defensive or special team touchdowns didn't check that much into it). Which means our offense was one of the top 13 offenses in week 1.

The sweeps and passes to the flat for losses were driving me crazy too.

No earth shattering revelation but I suspect the intent was to guess against the blitz- as mentioned those LBs are so fast, if you hit one of those while they're screaming up the middle, you may be on to something. Only problem, they're not only fast, but also smart.

Either way, we seemed to fail on those plays most of the time.

Seems every year for the last 20 years the Bucs have a lot of speed at LB

It's not that complicated.

Brees arm strength has declined so he doesn't take many risks down field.

Against most teams, his accuracy is enough to still move the ball.

However, against teams with excellent and fast LBs who can cover the flat, like Tampa, Dallas, etc. we struggle because all of the horizontal plays get shut down.

Brees was working on his arm strength this offseason and his pass to Cook was already longer than anything in the air he completed last year.

If, and it's a big if, he can push the ball down field a bit, the offense will be fine.

But if it's the same as last year, they will struggle against good defenses, especially once you get to the playoffs.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the interior OL has been weak the past few seasons. Hopefully Ruiz steps up and Peat is healthy/in shape.

This thread is anchored but I imagine deep balls take a little more time to get going and need more reps. Not having a preseason and first game he may just not feel comfortable with it yet. Last year in preseason people were complaining and first game against Texans he looked really good. Then of course he got hurt and that changed things.
