Jaylon smith is one of the weirder stories. He was a pro bowl linebacker who just fell off in a few months. He’s only 28 too.

If healthy, he is a legit signing

He wouldn’t be available in august if he still had the juice. Fine for a backup

He’s fine. Hopefully he doesn’t have to play. At least he passed a physical.

I think he is a top 5 linebacker on this team and was good at covering backs and tight ends when I watched him.

Everyone knew he'd have a short career

He’s a player you knew wouldn’t get a second contract. Cowboys messed up and gave it to him

Not necessarily. The linebacker position is on par with the running back position. Teams have just devalued it and seem to be looking to go younger rather than pay vets. It’s why they had a glut of vets still floating around with starting experience a week ago.

There are gluts of vets at every position, LB is no different. No one is signing their starting LB on Aug 9. What are you even well ackuallying about here

You’re basing that on name recognition alone. He hasn’t been good since 2019.

Before the injury in college, I recall several media articles saying he was a legitimate candidate for being drafted first overall that year.

Mark simenoux and Scott shanle were late additions, no?

The fact is, we signed a player who, if past his prime, still knows football and can play meaningful snaps in a pinch.

If he regains even some of his previous dominance, watch out!

No

I’m not hating on Smith, he’s fine for a backup. He’s just not what he once was. Davis has played damn near every snap the last three season, hopefully that trend continues.

Not really an apples-to-apples comparison. Both Simenoux & Shanle were under contract and playing preseason for a different team when the Saints traded for them. Hadn't seen much interest in Smith during free agency.
