Yeah, we replaced CJGJ with Taylor and will replace Taylor as well. I think a shutdown corner might be more important than the nickel spot. That was a leftover of Dennis Allen and Staley might want to change how he plays that position.

Too early to really say what this position will be. A guy like Styles or Bailey might change how you play that position all together.

That said, drafting a guy like Downs in the top ten to fill his role is a compliment to Taylor. I think a guys like Downs can do everything Taylor did with better coverage ability.
No question in my mind Downs would be a much better version of Alontae. A better version of a guy getting paid $20 million per year is a good pick at 8.

Maybe because we have two returning starters at edge?

The star position is often used as a pass rusher.

Elliss will be used as a pass rusher pretty often in this scheme as well

I would spend a fourth just on potential. I’m not sure he’s played his best or found his most productive role. Homer? Perhaps lol

his demeanor has been off putting at times. Perkins is a bit of a strange cat. hard to read.

Downs played a total of 41 snaps at outside CB in three collegiate seasons.

Taylor averaged 400 snaps a year at outside CB, and another 415 in the nickel. 100 in the box and a handful off the edge blitzing.

We can downplay his effectiveness but you’d be hard pressed to find one guy who will fill his role. And no, CJGJ did not fill that role either

I get what you are saying dude, but was that Taylor’s college stats? If not, I obviously don’t think that is a fair comparison.

Again though I am not trying to disparage what he did in our scheme, but I do think the coaches did a great job of creating a role that fit his strengths and he excelled.

I don’t think he is some type of irreplaceable, generational player, but we’ll see when he suits up for Tennessee.

I’m so pissed we didn’t keep him. You draft 2 good ones in the secondary and lose both. Adebo and Taylor. I hate it.

He can play it but he can’t even stay on the field. Be crazy to count on him at this point.

He was bad at everything but rushing the passer. No clue why so many fans are enamored with him. Toast in coverage and missed way too many tackles.

I think we are targeting Downs with the sentiment that Bailey/ Styles will be gone. Not sure if we take Downs > either of those guys if available.

If Bain is available would you take him over Downs?

This is the right question to ask. I'd take Bailey or Reese over Downs in a heartbeat, but Bain I'm less sure about. Drafting such an outlier in the top 10 is a gamble we don't have to take. I'll defer to Jeff Ireland and Brandon Staley - if they want Bain, I'm on board.
