Also, what was he going to do if he didn't sign?

I don't believe the NFL told anyone not to draft him. That is foolish talk. I do think teams were extra-cautious given the then-recent domestic violence controversies.

You are most definitely wrong.

Guys have had worse and more clear issues come up and still been drafted. This was a clear envelope-push by the league at a time when they were under fire for off the field stuff. Media would have run with it so hard: NFL makes accused murderer millionaire. It isn't that hard to figure out.

You can question why they didn't sign him as an UDFA once it was all cleared up, if you want. Personally I think he didn't want to play here. But it isn't fair to question why we did not draft him. He was talented enough to overlook the issue and draft him in the late rounds, and if I can make that assessment, I'm positive at least one of 32 NFL teams can too. They were absolutely clearly instructed (or agreed as a group) not to draft him, period.

Reenter and go in as a 1st-2nd rounder the following year.

This is argued ad nauseum. He isn't here, get over it. The circumstances are more than fans know, so I don't care. Some of you just hate the fact saints fo don't get lsu players. The really good ones we can't get and the questionable ones end up being busts or having absolutely questionable issues that you guys would flip the shite over if it was a guy from any other team. Oh and the last hit are guys who at the time had overlapping skillsets with players we already had on the team

No, that was denied. The NFL ruled on that right away.

Collins' representatives had told clubs that Collins would refuse to sign with a team that drafted him outside the third round and that Collins would simply re-enter the draft in 2016. However, that is not an option according to NFL rules, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Saturday. Teams were wary of drafting Collins until they know more information. The opinion across football has been relatively simple: Wait until the investigation process runs its course.

Yes, that it is obvious. I was just commenting on the lack of foresight by the Saints. The Cowboys took advantage of the situation.

And yet, I am the only one posting links to back up what I post.

I don't mind being wrong, and you are welcome to your opinion, but I sincerely doubt the NFL, from a legal sense, would say don't draft this guy.

I still would have called Collins and his agent's bluff (if they did send that out) with a last round pick.

Not sure he's really going to sit out an entire season and further risk any other potential outcomes.

Please understand though, I am not upset over it. I just wish they had taken the gamble.

And it is logical to think it's odd all 32 skipped.

Collins was actually not that good his rookie year Cooks is far more versatile than Landry is Reid is good, not great. Yea I know KV isn't either. KV was the better prospect at the time al things considered.

Yeah I agree. I prefer Cooks over Landry. I also prefered KV over Reid.. At least at the time. And I really liked Reid in college. He had that great hit vs Miss St. LINK

going forward though I'm not sure which safety I would rather have.

As far as Collins as a rookie, I'm not sure. I didn't follow them very well, but was he able to be eased into that situation? I imagine they have decent depth on the line after the past couple drafts. I would still like to have him.. He was after all just a rookie lineman. People saying he hates the Saints, I don't believe that is the case. He just didn't grow up a Saints fan.. and yes I would have called his agent's bluff to sit out an entire year with a 7th round pick. but it's all good. I'm not upset over any of the missed players. I would have preferred some of these guys on the OP's list over who we drafted, but not the majority of them. I had no idea Turner would be so beast as a rookie!

He didn't care where he was drafted, he wanted money.

It was already determined that he couldn't reenter in 2016, so he was gonna sign somewhere.

It was an excellent opportunity for the Saints to pick up a quality oine guy, which they clearly need.

You are misreading that quote.

He could absolutely reenter the draft if he was drafted. He couldn't reenter the draft in 2016 if he wasn't drafted.

So where did he say he didn't want to go to the Saints?

Sean Payton said we were interested and that he wanted to get away. This is as an UDFA.

Still seems silly that a 7th rounder wasn't spent on him by any team

They still tried.

LINK

One team rep tells McCartney they’re considering drafting Collins in the fifth round.
“I’m thinking, That’s the worst thing for us,” McCartney says. “I ran the numbers. If a guy is drafted, he signs a four-year deal. If he gets a three-year undrafted-free-agent contract, plays well and often, then gets the first-round tender and the player participation pool bonus money, he could be paid better than the 33rd pick in the draft.”

...

In Baton Rouge, Collins sweats out the second day of the draft while his agents unfurl a new plan. Rather than lobby for him to be drafted, they issue an ultimatum to teams: Draft La’el in the second or third rounds, or don’t draft him at all.
The hardest part, Gilmore says, was selling Collins on the idea: “I’m explaining it to this young man and he’s having a hard time accepting it. We’re trying not to get drafted? He had to have a lot of trust in us.”

...

Some teams express contempt for Collins’ bold move. Others call his agents to gauge their position. Are they bluffing? Six teams tell the agency they’re going to draft him on Saturday, the third day of the draft. “If you draft him, he’s going into next year’s draft,” McCartney tells them.
Was it a bluff?
“We can put it on the record now: We were never going back in the draft,” Smith says of waiting for the 2016 draft. “If someone had drafted him, we would’ve had a long, long discussion about it, but at the end of the day you can’t go back in the draft. He could get injured, gain weight, or 10 great tackles could come out. Too many risks.”

Stanley Jean Baptiste was such a great pic. you just don't understand the potential that Loomis and Payton saw.

His rookie year, we were bringing DB's off of the practice squad to start games (yes, even UDFA rookies) and this bum still didn't play one snap. Can someone out there provide the list of LSU guys still available at the time we took the sissy french boy?

I remember when they drafted Al Woods and he never made the team. Where did he go to school?

It's pointless there's just no way these guys will agree an LSU guy is worthy of the Saints. I got killed when I argued we should have taken Reid over KV. Major douche parade that day and even though Reid has done well these same guys would still argue KV is their guy. Oh well Vicodin is a powerful drug I suppose lol
