Penning will be a work in progress this season, not sure he cracks the starting lineup unless there is an injury

Thankfully, Hurst looked good on the first drive so there’s no immediate concern.

Question is when and at what position does he get the necessary reps to improve?

We are technically trying to win this season.

At least he has a mean streak and isn’t a cuck like Ruiz or Peat.

Yea he’s getting an education tonight for sure. Looks good in run blocks but he’s absolutely letting the D get to him on pass protection. He’s letting them make first move and he’s just reacting. Hopefully he get that confidence & aggressiveness going for pass pro soon as well

Might get them at guard.

I believe the saints went into this season knowing penning was raw in pass pro and technique.

Hurst has the best contract on the entire saints roster. I said as much when he signed it.

I agree I can see more potential reps at guard, especially if we are trying to grind out games and when Peat undoubtedly goes down.

We all knew this when we drafted him. He is a mauler in the run game but his pass pro needs work. Technically he looked better last night than he did in college. Now he just needs to put it all together. He will continue to improve and will be an elite left tackle when he puts it together

I’ll tell you this… Hurst looked really bad last night. Got beat nearly every play.

We spent the 19t pick of the draft on a project? Sorry, but you don't waist the 19th pick on a project. Save that for round 3 or 4. And I don't care about how much "bulldog" he has in him, or what a "brawler" he his. I care about how skilled he is at pass and run blocking.

Peat is a very good run blocker..

What? He was supposed to replace Armstead. He was supposed to be a starter. Thing is, some draft people really didn’t like this pick and didn’t like Penning. But, Saints drafted him to start this year. Who picks a project OT at 19?

It just gave people a chance to sound cool talking about how fighting in practice isn’t a big deal and they love his nasty streak. Meanwhile one of his biggest weaknesses was getting penalized cause he can’t control his damn emotions.

Thing is the saints knew he was raw and would take some time. I think they loved his physical ability(jeff ireland).

They already have hurst who filled in admirably at left tackle last year.

The saints usually never go into a draft needing a player to start at a specific position. They like to sure the roster up prior to the draft.

Never said by the Saints nor the vast majority of post here. We hoped but every other post was thankful we had Hurst who was penciled in at LT since mini camp. Everyone but you it seems knew that Penning would have to beat the vet to take the job.

Hurst is a nice gate keeper. A great backup and someone who can fill in fine, but someone you expect your first round pick to beat out.

I’m actually ok with Hurst starting this year. He’s solid.
