Never said by the Saints nor the vast majority of post here. We hoped but every other post was thankful we had Hurst who was penciled in at LT since mini camp. Everyone but you it seems knew that Penning would have to beat the vet to take the job.

I didn’t say he would be handed the job. Yes he would have to beat out Hurst. But you expect your first round pick to beat out a career backup who only starts when someone gets injured. Penning was drafted to beat Hurst and be the starter.

Everyone expected him to be the starter and Armstead replacement. Now it’s already looking like this will be a redshirt year for him, unless someone gets hurt, which is likely with our guys.

Hurst played the 2nd most offensive snaps on the team last year. 12th highest rated OT per PFF and a top 5 pass blocker. The conversation from jump has been that Penning has an uphill battle to beat out Hurst. Only the uniformed expected Penning to slide in. He will have good opportunity to learn this year as a swing guy who can also play some guard

Trevor Penning - 90.9
Garrett Wilson - 78.7
Kenny Pickett - 74.0
Charles Cross - 72.2

Penning was drafted to be the long term solution for Armstead starting next year. They are comfortable with Hurst this year. If Penning was polished he would have been a top 5 pick. He played at a lower level of competition and has raw pass pro technique but all the tools and ability is there to be a top 5 left tackle in the league. The motor and work ethic is also undeniable which is a big component of a player taking the next step. That is why they drafted him in the first. He is not a 50/50 project. He is a 90/10 project. He just needs coaching.
