Few players received as many glowing reports out of New Orleans Saints training camp as Marcus Davenport has. The fourth-year pro seems to have flipped a switch, bringing a much-needed dose of physicality and burst off the edge to practices day in and day out.

And what’s most encouraging is that Davenport’s level-up extended to the Saints’ two preseason games. Pro Football Focus graded him as the top defensive end to hit the field this summer, and he did it in just two games. Davenport’s 93.6 rating was the highest of all his peers across the NFL in exhibition.

But that’s not all. Davenport was just one of three Saints players to rank best at his position: Marquez Callaway paced the league’s wide receivers with a 95.9 grade, and Zack Baun led the linebackers with a 91.2. We obviously need to see these players carry their success over into the regular season, but it’s encouraging to see them playing so well so soon.

Especially considering the large roles Davenport and Callaway are expected to play on their sides of the ball. Baun is projected to be the third linebacker in a unit that only fields two, but he’s shown he could push Kwon Alexander or be a solid backup plan should the veteran miss more time with injuries.

For a player whose career has been so frustrating so far, good news is welcome news for Davenport. “Two Firsts” has experienced too many stops and starts with injuries and quiet stretches of play, but it looks like he’s finally turning the corner and putting his considerable physical gifts to good use. Let’s see him do it next Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.

If he would just be able to get about 1/5th of his almost sacks, he is easily in the pro-bowl

Pressures are legitimately important, especially when you have Cam Jordan ready to clean it up.

If he turns the corner this year, it’s all worth it.

Didn't we know that he would blow up this year. Just in time to get a new huge contract that probably will not come from the Saints.

I'm not saying they are wrong on this, but our FO will view him as a player that has not produced most years and has injuries where as some other team will view him as a missing piece that they are willing to overpay for.

Last year that was Trey. Trey cleaned up so many pressures off of Cam and DP that he got paid off of it.

Playing for real starts next week. Let’s see how he performs then. It’s time for him to step up.

Im sure this has nothing to do with the fact that this is a CONTRACT Season, right? I mean an average, frequently injured & unavailable player thru the first 3 seasons of their career wouldn’t all of a sudden have a big breakthrough season by playing even when nicked up some & always give 110% effort solely because it’s the last year of his rookie contract & the team has to decide if they want to keep him & offer a very lucrative, multi-year contract.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a player pulling something like that only to then revert back to his normal, nothing spectacular play. Has anyone else ever seen or heard of that happening?

This is just not true. Cam jordan had a down year last year.

He did look different though.

I've been hard on davenport but he looked really good this preseason.

Hopefully he plays like that all year.
He already got his 5th year option picked up so he is under contract for next yr no matter what.

Cam Jordan always seemed to disappear the last 2 seasons at the end of the stretch. Later we found out he was playing injured.

Davenport is a first ballot preseason HOFer. Change my mind.
