That was some of the weakest stuff I've ever seen.

Any chance he whiffed on purpose? I'm not a conspiracy theory guy, but seriously, how easy would it have been for him to at least disrupt the pass? How does a guy who gets paid to tackle, completely whiff like that?

I don't know if you're being sarcastic....but seriously, the guy had a clear fricking line to Newton. Didn't even lay a hand on the guy.

eta: Tolbert did ride him out a little bit, but you can clearly see that Jenkins could have at least grabbed Newtons jersey.

Zero sarcasm.
Its very well known around these here parts I've wanted MJ as far removed from the safety position as humanly possible

The Eagles.

Got a average safety at best for 6 million a year.

Also traded for a running back that looked like a pin ball last year and had zero acceleration. Sorry, but Sproles was done last year, and it was quite evident.

My journey with Jenkins:

Draft: "Don't want him. LaFell burnt him for a TD in the NCG."

Rookie year: (started at CB due to injury against TB) "Man, he is really developing, best CB out there today"

2010: "He's no Shaprper, but it's only his 1st year at safety...Holy shite! He just stripped Dez Bryant!

2011: "WTF Gregg Williams? Jenkins is bad, but Harper frickin' sucks! Possibly the worst safety tandem in the NFL!"

2012: "Maybe Spagz is just putting him in bad spots. This is getting beyond ridiculous...Holy shite, did you see him run down Vincent Jackson?!"

2013: "Yay! We drafted a safety to replace Harper...Oh it's to replace Jenkins???...Oh now I see what a real safety looks like...Vacarro is a beast...GET JENKINS OFF THE GODDAMN FIELD!!!!"

2014: "OMG, Byrd & Vacarro may be the best safety tandem in the NFL!"

I thought it was Roy Williams?

But yes, your post is essentially my exact thought process. Except KV is indeed harper's replacement.

I hope someone bookmarked all of the "WHY DID WE DRAFT KV, JARVIS JONES WAS RIGHT THERE" posts for when the first pick is in AND our defensive backfield actually ends up being one of the best in the league.

that's a great summary Freek. Very parallel thoughts that did go back to the NCG at draft time.

That was quite foreboding. LaFell was a 2nd Rder that hasn't lived up to that. He has shown to be more like 3rd-5th rd talent. That 3rd to 5th Rd talent abused Jenkins who should have been a round behind LaFell.

Both are good examples of players draft stock being inflated from what quality teams they were a part of.

There was the initial shock by many but most followed with "In Loomis I trust, so we'll see." I think it took less than a month before almost all said "Loomis was right, I was wrong."

I think it was the 2012 season with spags where malcom jenkins got an interception on the first play in the first preseason game against Arizone.

"I was like, HERE WE GO; finally MJ will have his breakout year!!"

10 weeks later

"ok, well it wasn't last year, it wasnt this year; maybe he will break out next year.....wait a second, how long have I been saying this."

He's one of those players that everyone constantly tried to love

Good guy, strong character, smart, athletic, just limited in football skills. If he had been a 4th Rd pick I'd be extolling his play, value, contribution, and wish him luck. Now I'll be happy if he performs at the same level he did here as a starter for another team.

Preseason "breakouts" happen every year. I learned my lesson years ago. 2011 preseason opener against San Fran, we had 6 sacks in the first half and we were losing our minds. Alex Smith eventually got his.

If you ever feel like combing through my posts, I'm pretty much anti-Jenkins. This move is going to be such an upgrade, assuming Rob Ryan uses him correctly as a deep safety.

Byrd is almost an exact copy of Earl Thomas, but with better ball skills, though not as much athleticism.

I also think Thomas is very good at coming down to stop the run which I don't expect Byrd will be asked to do very much.

Man I can't wait to see some single high safety, press man looks.
