Penning not being a bust is so freaking crucial

If penning is what we hope he is and develops quickly, its hard to complain about the pick and further the compensation given up.
But if he's not up to the status of what we think he is, it could be catastrophic failure. Giving up next year's picks etc and other talents passed on....
No pressure Doug Marronne.

God only makes so many people that are 6'7, 350 and can move. I am sure Marronne is up to the challenge.

I'm heavily leaning to Ram at LT and Penning at RT. Penning has to immediately prove himself as a pass protector or its too risky at LT. RT... go be a mauler like you are and work on your craft.

I think they may go that route. Regardless, I have confidence in Marrone. About the only thing I have confidence in him to do but the brother can coach up an O-Line. Just have to hope he hasn’t lost his touch and can get Penning up to speed. We also forget that Strief is an assistant coach and Payton really praised him last year for the work he did with the OL.
But I do think Penning looks more like a RT than LT. I wouldn’t be surprised to see that switch. They’ll figure that out in camp, though.

just liked they figured out the McCoy/Ruiz situation. I always thought McCoy should have been moved to G. He could be a Jahri Evans for us at that spot.

People are up in arms about Olave, but penning carries way more risk. Wouldn’t be surprised if Hurst starts over him to start the year and penning works as the swing guy

i agree.
My issue with Olave is can he be great? Cause if he's going to be very nice.... that's lofty value at the 11 spot. And then, i'm a jameson guy. I think Jameson had the ability to be a stud with Michael Thomas and Winston in this offense. Not sure about his future in Detroit now!

You always feel better about a risk at 19 over 11
Also a failed LT can sometimes become a successful guard or RT.

but we gave up next year's pick which can be a few injuries away from being a top 10 selection.

Having Marrone is such a blessing for this situation IMO

And he is pissed off about something which you also cant coach. They drafted him as a LT and I think he sticks there.
Also that wing span at that height. Not really any way around him.

I heard he held at senior bowl practice though. One time he held someone into a QBs legs even.

I've read a couple places that he had some bad habits/techniques that may mean trouble in making the jump from FCS to the NFL. So there may be an adjustment period for him rather than be an immediate high level starter like Ram was

I read where Allen stated he is leaving Ram at RT and Penning will be competing at LT.

We weren’t a top 10 pick this year without our QB, Best WR and without Kamara for 4 games.

Penning on Davenport...

Was also the most penalized OT in FCS so I guess we know what happens when he gets beat.
He’s big and athletic and mean.
High ceiling and I think His floor is a really good left guard.

I think so. His route running is amazing and his work ethic supposedly matches it. That will translate to a lot of schemes for a lot of years. He is also plenty fast enough.
