Who cares. Payton ain't winning anything anywhere else. He had the most accurate passer in NFL history and wasted his entire career with bullshite drafts and terrible defenses. Every pick and signing was his doing and he had been a bust on majority of them. Payton knew he was in quicksand without a QB and skipped. Wherever he goes he'll be a dud. Because he had a HOF QB and 100% support from ownership and couldn't get it done outside that fluke 09 season.

I dont think he was looking to get out as much as he was about to be fired.
If my timeframe is right this was before that epic draft. We had just come off 3 7-9 seasons with historically bad defenses. Sean had constantly butchered his defensive hires.
Context matters. You are framing it as him bolting. In reality another bad season he was fired.

Funny how one of the resident board trolls follows me around like a puppy dog for believing a coach who went 7-9 three seasons in a row should have his job evaluated.

Although I didnt consider this, I still dont agree.
Dont see Loomis firing a super bowl winning coach(the teams first and only) for bad drafts (under any circumstance) only to later hire a guy he knows/wants for scouting (Ireland).
He was ready to bolt, the draft and the Ireland hire was an appeasement.

the guys column has jumped the shark, but there is no doubt hes wired up.
Look, either all the writers were making shite up about Payton to Cowboys outta thin air, or where there was smoke there was fire.
I was in the "its bullshite" camp until he left, then a more detailed story gets released that it was done save for Anthony Davis. Now we can look back and see that it wasnt BS, he was actively looking for a way out until he just quit.
So, tl;dr - it comes down to whether you think Peter King is knowledgeable and connected in writing about things after the fact, or hes full of shite.

I mean they almost traded him to Indy.
But also consider this... It was well known at that time that the ownership situation was in flux with the battle with Rita.
You could be right about the bolting part but that may have been more to do with the ownership situation at that moment.

Welcome to the world of mights and maybes. All speculation and rumors.
He can step out of the pressure cooker of being an NFL head coach and step into the world of broadcasting for the same money or more, with a lot more free time for his new wife and his children and not near the pressure and if it doesn't work out he can step back into coaching. One or two bad decisions on his part and the team is not as successful everybody would be calling for his head.
Life is too short. How about waiting for him to get a star on his visor before passing judgement.
I have no plans to get CSP's approval on any life decisions I might make.

Everyone overlooks Payton's ego and the fact that he is a huge a-hole. We loved him because he was our a-hole, but he is still a huge dick.

He was looking at houses this past week while at the SB.
I don’t think being in New Orleans drove him out, but he certainly isn’t going to spend his off years here and obviously wants to live & coach in a bigger market

Eh, at this point who really cares.
I choose to remember his time fondly and had a great time watching this team.
Others are salty about it and i kind of get that as well now.
At this point im anxious to see how we fill up our staff and what the offseason plans are. For the first time in 15 years we really have no fricking clue. Kind of exciting lol
