By this time next year this board will be littered with turncoat fans bitching about how overrated Payton is and that we got lucky in that Super Bowl and how if it weren't for Brees he would've been fired a long time ago. It'll be the inverse Jameis effect, who was loathed and constantly criticized up until this last year where he was hailed as the savior.

that was/is hysterical...dude was never as bad, or as good as has been said.
Look, hes an great coach who's very large ego gets in the way alot of times... it'll be interesting to see how he does with TV (dont think hell have immediate success)
but facts are facts - dude has actively either stumped for, or listened to overtures, to leave the team since AT LEAST 2017. When that didnt materialize, he finally just walked away.
And when, not if, he takes the Dallas job, he can frick right off.

As of 2-15-22 there is zero evidence that CSP would ever play for the kind of owner Jerry is. But that sure doesn't stop the noise.

Payton may coach again someday which I’m fine with. But I think there were several factors that played a part in him stepping away. Family, burnout, networks throwing large sums of money at him, and one I don’t hear mentioned much. His health. He was on The Rich Eisen show this past week and Sean mentioned something that made me put the situation into his perspective. He said the coaching grind will shorten your life. Maybe he’s had some health studies done and Drs have told him he needs some relief from the stress of being an NFL HC?
I really think he wants the Network commentary thing to work out because of all the benefits it would provide him. He’ll get to see and spend more time with his family and will still be some what involved with football but minus the tremendous amount of stress it causes. Also, he’ll be getting paid handsomely at the same time. The more I think about it the more it makes sense for him to have stepped away. As a Saints fan, the rejection still stings, but I get it. If I was in Payton’s shoes it would be hard for me to pass on the same opportunity.

True, but safe to say if its making the rounds around the league in 2017 that he could maybe be had for compensation.

This weekend I was told that he continued to feel less safe in the city and felt like he was followed home on more than one occasion. He also did not jive with local politics such as mask mandate and just the mayor in general.
Came from a pretty reliable sauce who has told me who the saints would draft before the draft that always worked out.

I mean one can make a great case that post-Super Bowl Payton was very overrated based on how much his teams won and what little he has to show for it.

1000% correct.
He did do an excellent job of boosting his and Drew’s personal stats.
The first things the s payton apologists will bring up is total winning percentage and offensive yards and rankings.
No mention of defense and special teams over his career here.
And not to mention, never sniffing another SuperBowl.
He quit on the Saints because he thinks he can win “his” second SuperBowl elsewhere.

How many 7-9 seasons?

It’s all about getting to and winning the SuperBowl.
